I have decided that it is time to upgrade my Kennedy collection to a Dansco album but I am having a hard time deciding on which album to purchase. Namely, an album with or without spots for the proof coins.

I currently have six proofs, including a 1970 S, all from circulation. My brother and I both roll search halves so I figure that over time I will acquire a few more.

My dilemma is that if I buy the album with proofs, I will have a bunch of holes in my album that will take me a long time to fill. Also, I will be tempted to start buying cheap proofs to make my book look fuller. There is not another coin type where I actively collect proofs.

I noticed that the proof album ends in 2012. I assume Dansco will start a second album after that. This would mean purchasing a second album in the very near future. If I purchased the album without proofs, is there enough space in the back of the album to add another page? I am thinking of maybe buying a blank page and just adding that to the back of the book and inserting my handful of proofs that way.

To sum up, should I purchase the regular album and not have a place to display my proofs, or should I purchase the album with proofs, have a bunch of holes, and also have to shell out for a second album in two years?

I know there are a lot of people who search halves on these forums. What are your thoughts and ideas for my situation?

I'm not going to be much help to you, but I'm thinking about the exact same thing. I have folders that I keep my JFK p and d halves from searching. I have a nice little collection, but thinking about a dansco. I have decided that I probably will not find all the proofs from circulation and I just don't seek out JFK halves as a collection enough that I would buy proofs. I'm going to search for silver to fund my Franklin proofs and just keep upgrading my JFK circ p and d set in an album.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Kennedy collection go for Dansco album without spots for the proof coins....save lots time & $

The only Kennedy proofs worth saving are the SILVER 1964, 1968S, 69S & 1970 S...PLUS ALL SILVER halfs 1992S-2012S
the other proof halves from 1971s-1991s & Non-Silver S are worthless

Many will tell you .. to do what you want.

I look at it, that you don't have to fill the album in any set time frame.
I mean you can fill it quick of take years. So choose the album you like best
and take your time.

As for the pages, most likely Dansco will come out with another page to add to the existing album, for the new coins. When needed they will come out with a new album (bigger binder) that will hold more pages.

Most of the time you can you can add a blank page at the end of a album to put the proof coins.

FYI - the with proofs album ... has a lot of proofs.
Both the clad and silver S mints. The silver proofs can get costly if you have to buy them. If I am counting right there would be 21 90% proof halves and and 3 40% proof halves also 41 Clad proofs.

that's like the problem I had with Morgan dollars. I wasn't going to get a full set, so I got the Morgan Date album and have a spare blank page in the back for others I pickup.

This is my first post. I think I purchased the same album (#8166-160 slots) from my local coin dealer 3 months ago. Luckily over the years I had accumulated several BU and AU+ early Kennedys. My coin dealer is always breaking up proof sets and I have been lucky enough to get them at half the retail book value, even what I consider the high dollar ones (1997-S Not even Silver). Yes, I was tempted and fell to the dark side for the *cheap proofs, but when you look at what the full albums are selling for and silver has dropped, just maybe I'll be laughing when silver jumps up again for the few silver coins in the set.

After spending $100.00 last week, I jokingly told my dealer he was more or less forcing me to fill it up or feel guilty. But then again, it took me 20 years to fill up the Lincoln wheat album with fine or better(all but the Holy Grail 1909-S VDB), so now I feel I deserve to cheat a little.

Of the 160 slots, I have only? have 82 slots to go...Woo-Hoo.....but that includes all of the (20)1992 - 2011 Silver Proofs. I have just as many duplicates setting outside the album, Hum...I might have to put them in a another blank album holder.
So now I start the uphill expensive battle you that you are fretting about, so take your time. It took me 20 years to get past the wheat pennies.

As far as the extra pages, I'm setting my sights high on the varieties (heavy hair accented, 74 DDO,79 & 81 Type II,'s, etc.) to go in the back of the book to be a "complete" set with a 1998-S Proof Matte Finish. Then I'll start the slow upgrade process for the next 20 years....

*I consider them cheap if they are not graded and I can be the judge of the grade when I buy them...thanks to years of Photograde.

to the forums Stinger!

I knew there were a lot of Kennedy proofs, but after GR58 mentioned that there were 60+ extra proofs I think I am now leaning towards just getting the album w/o holes for proofs. I will probably buy a blank page and stick my proofs in there.

I might even buy a blank Dansco book at some point just to hold my proofs from different series. I only collect the proofs that I find from circulation, so I only have a couple of each denomination. Buying the Dansco's w/ proofs for each series would be a waste, so maybe just one book dedicated to them would be the way to go.

Granite ... I agree that is a good way to go.

My Kennedy is the wo/proofs. And I think it is a very nice looking set.

For my proofs I purchased a Dansco half dollar album. It has slots for 80 coins.
I started out just putting proof Kennedy half dollar into it. It has now become
my life book ... what I call it. It has one proof half dollar for every year I
have been alive. Starting in 1958 to current .... I hope I will be able to fill
all 80 slots and maybe add a new page. I would like to someday add picture pages
to help document my life .. to pass down with my coin collection.

My life album has proof Franklins, Kennedy and some commemorative half dollars,
to me it is a very nice looking collection.

GR58, my life set starts in 1958 too but I have held to only sets of silver. Having all silver proof sets from 1958 to date (still in the original packaging) I have opted to not have current modern albums as I only collect the silver varieties.

I have the album with slots for proofs. I also roll search and have filled almost all of the slots with what I've found that way. However, in 5+ years of roll searching, I've only found 1 silver proof and it was so ugly, I didn't put it in the album, but with my junk silver stash. I have purchased all of the silver proofs at shows / dealers in the area. They cost a little bit more but really are the prettiest coins in the album and probably worth the most also.

Having said that, Granite, my advice is to do what works for you. That way, you'll be happy with whatever you choose.

Muddler .. I keep getting all the proof sets too ... but I keep breaking them open ..
I have done it at least three times now.

Sitting on my desk right now are all proofs sets from 1968 through 2007 plus a few like 56,57,58 and 59.
(I did give my daughter a couple .. so most all)

I don't think they will make it through the weekend with out getting broke open.

I have been checking out the Kennedy album w/o proofs. It looks like it is currently a 7/8" binder and it includes five pages. I would like to purchase a sixth page so I could include my proofs in the back. Can someone who has this album, 7166, let me know if there is enough room to add a sixth page and still be able to fit it inside the slipcase?

I had to go pull mine out, I would say it would hold one more page.

I don't have a slipcase for this set, I could only say it might fit
into the slipcase with the the extra page.

My 7166 has five pages and has slots up to 2017 D. From 1964 to 2011
takes 88 coins. Mine is full, all coins were cut from mint sets except
for the 1982 and 1983 coins ... those I pulled from UNC roll I got back
in the 1980's. This is a really nice looking set with BU coins.

I have been thinking of doing a 8166 set, but my focus has been on
completing my UNC commemorative dollar set and a few proof ASE's
I still need to have a complete set proof silver eagle set.

However unlikely, I am hoping the half dollar changes next year so I can call my Kennedy half dollar series done.

Not a bad idea.

I actually have my Kennedy half dollars in two albums.

I bought my original 8166 in 1984. It only has four pages and goes to 1991 with two blank holes at the end (I currently have duplicate 1964 and 1964-D coins there).

I started a second album with blank (undated) half dollar pages with one year per row (starting with 1992-P, 1992-D, 1992-S Clad Proof, and 1992-S Silver Proof on the first row). Using this layout, my Kennedy collection ends in 2011 with the 2011-S Silver proof (not the 2012-D that the current 8166 has). BTW, having all of the proof and silver proofs lined up is very nice.

Just in case anyone else was wondering if this would work, I found out some additional information. I was checking out the Dansco album for the 1999-2008 Statehood Quarters. It is a five page album and also fits in the 7/8" slipcase. There is an option to purchase a sixth page for the 2009 quarters and Dansco says that it will fit in the album and also fit in the slipcase.

In light of this, my plans to add a blank page for proofs should work out perfectly.

I added the 2009 quarter page to my Statehood Quarter album; there was plenty of room. I do not use the slip cases; but if I did, it would easily fit since the album still closes flat.
