hey all, just wondering how SOPA and PIPA could effect some things around here on the CCF. I don't want to share any links, but a quick search of the 2 topics can easily show anyone who is in the dark a thing or two about them. Email, call, or sign a petition to your local congressmen if you disagree with the proposals. But really, how would it make our lives different here if passed? Anyone have any ideas? We are kind of like a blog site and we aren't really copyrighted and such, so might it mean an end to the CCF as a whole? Lets hear what all of you know or don't know about the topic

It wouldn't disrupt the posting that goes on here, as far as I can tell. It could eliminate the coin facts page -- but I doubt it. They're going after bigger fish. Still, I find it alarming. It doesn't seem to have a very good enforcement plan. I could see where things could go bad quite easily.

I have wondered this myself. I would assume that CCF would be fine as long as it did not display anything deemed 'intelectual property' of someone that did not give consent. That would be up to the members not to post such things, but how can we tell what is and what is not copyrighted material? Not everything is so clearly marked as being such. 'Tis an interesting question, to say the least. I would like to hear what anyone else has to say on the issue.

It should not have a large affect on these boards, unless someone from the government wants it to or someone with enough money wants it to. It that case they would shut us down, just like they will with anything else that displeases them.
Buddy - it always starts with the "bigfish" then trickles down to whatever they want to apply it to.
I am not a fan of government having power like this (like they do not already have enough). On that note I called everyone of my Representatives in the house and senate today.

It is not just about copyrighted material. It is opening the door to allow the powers-that-be the ability to make the internet line up with the trends of mainstream media. The internet has been the main thorn in the side of the one-sided media and current education system b/c they have no control over it so the unadulterated truth of matters gets out en masse despite their efforts.
This should not affect much on CCF immediately, but do not put it past a governing body to overstep the bounds of freedom that are given up/ripped away from the people. History has proven this over and over.
History also records very few people who were sorry they had freedoms. But it records that almost everyone (who is aware of the whole picture) regrets when freedom is stripped from them.

The whole PIPA/SOPA thing is basically following the plot to Caddyshack. You've got these old rich golfers (MPAA/RIAA) trying to protect their turf from the rabble (the playing-field leveling quality of the Internet) and the new money (Rodney Dangerfield plays the part of Google here.) This cheeky gopher (foreign pirates) is being a nuisance with its network of gopher holes (series of tubes) and the deranged grounds-keeper (Congress) engages in an incredible overreaction, blowing the whole place up. Ultimately, the gopher (pirates) can easily escape such ham-handed efforts, though the course doesn't fare as well.

That is a scarily accurate analogy. I will be sharing it.

All it takes is a junior lawyer trying to make a name for himself that works for the firm retained by the Grading Service. He Googles the service's name, winds up here, pokes around, sees picture, sends "The Notice", goodbye CCF. Scary.

Quote: we aren't really copyrighted All you have to do is "fix" a work and it's copyrighted. Write it down, type it, take a picture, film it, record it, etc. Go to Wikipedia and search for "Berne Convention". You no longer have to put the C in a circle with the year and send it to the Library of Congress. You don't have to publish it, make it available to anyone, or even tell anyone it exists. Copyright is automatic nowadays. IANAL but I did own a small publishing company and we worried about usage rights constantly.

You even quoted me then went on about images.... Did you quote the wrong member?

scubu -- my comment about the Coin Facts page is extreme and unlikely to happen.
However, if taken to the extreme, the authors of those pages could be charged to prove that the facts presented were gathered from primary resources, because secondary sources (like books or public records) must be cited -- just like term papers.
For instance: It is a common fact that water boils at 212 degrees F. But unless I wander over to my kitchen and get out the thermometer, boil water, record the temp., repeat for verification -- I can't present that knowledge as fact without citing Wikipedia because that's where I just checked that information.
It seems ridiculous, but we live in a litigious society and it is a very easy way to keep all small enterprises off the Internet. Even if the big guys lose the case in court, the small guys will go broke and disappear.
