I've just come across a 2001 Twenty Cents with the obverse printed upside down. Is this common? Edited by larena 02/13/2012 8:09 pm

Excellent find! It will be a 180 degree 'upset' or 'rotated' die. Not common with the 2001, but it is a known error. I can't tell you the approx value as I haven't seen enough of them sell. I reckon at least $20, maybe more. Can you post some pictures?

I have never seen one of these pics please! hard to photograph I suppose, maybe a mirror to show both sides in one shot? I would think they are pretty hard to find!

I was hoping you would see my message Nancy. will put pics up for you now I scanned it Nancy, putting the top tag in same spot on scanner so I hope you can see the degree of upset by the staples.

Quote: I have never seen one of these pics please! hard to photograph I suppose I find the best way is to place the coin in a 2x2, that way the pics will show the degree of upset. I have probably got upwards of 11-15 upset coins, mostly $1 and 2 x 10c but not a good 2001 20c. The only ones of those I have are only upset by 5 degrees, and they are quite common. Also 5 degrees is an acceptable tolerance by RAM, so not worth anything more than 20c.

So what is the proper terminology for this error Nancy? I presume I should have written the proper term where I have 'upside down' (that's the novice in me lol)

I'm not positive which way the upset degree is measured, CW or CCW, but I think it's CW, so this appears to be about 200 degrees. If I'm off target, someone will be sure to set me straight on it soon. Either way it's a wonderful find and I wish I had one. Well done larena! PS: As the originator of this thread, you can change the title of it to something more appropriate.

I agree with Nancy.Nice find, but would probably pay a lot more than a measly $20 for such a rare item.2001 seems to have been a good year for "upsets". And can remember in the early years of decimals that upsets couldn't occur because of the new "you beaut" machines that held the blank firmly in place. Yeah right!

My upset decimal coins are: at least 12 x 2001 CoF $1 1 x 1996 Parkes $1 2 x 1966 10c 1 x 1966 2c
I believe there are also upsets to be found in 1985 MoR $1, 1999 YoOP $1, 2002 O'Bck $1, and possibly 2005 MoR $1, as well as 2000 20c, 1966 2c.
I have info of 1 x 20¢ 2001 upset 30° that sold for $5.00 sometime before Jun 2011.

Nice find! Thanks for sharing. Upsets seem to be more common than I thought. I have been meaning to ask some questions about finding these. I will start anothet topic.

I think if I started including a test for upset coins in my daily noodle it would more than double the time taken. I suppose many of them are hard to recognise at first glance and dont get removed from circulation often as they are harder to pick.

when I sort my coins, I have the obverse facing me and then just turn them to see the reverse, so it was spotted quite easily that way...but I thought I was going MAD when I saw it......

I love the first two seconds after a rare find when you're just about to move on and flip over the next coin but your brain catches up to your fingers and your heart skips a beat. Woooh wait a second what was that! Yes!... or something along those lines.
