I hope these images will help people in seeing what a lot of the Chinese fakes look like up close - in the right lighting conditions. I put this on a small table in the morning sun. This tends to make the pitting really stand out to the camera. When this coin is held in hand, especially in a 2X2, it looks good. When under magnification though, you can see the pitting as in the closeup of the "ES." But remember, in a normal lighting situation the pitting is not as prominent. This coin was sold by the Chinese place that was featured in the magazine articles. He used to be the largest seller on ebay until he was kicked off.

That is what I would expect from a lesser quality copy/reproduction/replica or whatever they are calling them these days.

Not a very convincing replica. The surface is really grainy and lacks detail, and it doesn't look old in any way.

Great pictures--a good example of a "spark erosion" type of counterfeit. Judging by the style of the legends, they used an 1857-58 LL, and added that clunky date. This one should be a little obvious to truly fool anyone (I hope) Good as a placeholder.

Thanks for the link - a good read. To be educated on spotting these Chinese fakes I got a bunch from the guy when he was selling on ebay. I want to eventually get all of them posted here. It is good to know that although he made tons of fakes, most of his are this obvious. Here is a link to an article about this guy's factory. http://coins.about.com/od/worldcoin...eiting-Ring/It looks good in hand until it gets in the right lighting or under magnification.

This guy I know showed me an 1877 IHC the other day that he bought online and when I looked at it under magnification, and I saw the same thing, pitting. It's such a shame what the Chinese do. Felt bad breaking the news to the guy...

Thanks for posting. I'm fairly new at this and I really appreciate this kind of information -- not that I was ready to buy a coin like that just yet.

I wonder why they don't make faked copies of the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel. I need one for my Album.

I don't think that anyone who owns a real one (1913 Liberty nickel) is willing to loan it out for the process. Plus I would image that it would be kinda hard to get through the plastic slab, since it's nonconductive. I could loan you my 1913 "copy" that is in my 7070 decoy album (while my real ones are resting in their slabs).

They do make 1913s Although I never bought one of them. I knew I'd never run into one to have to worry about it being fake Here is a list of the V nickel fakes he made/makes: 1913 1885/1886 double headed 1885 1886 1888 1892 1894 1895 1896 1912 P,D,S edited to add picture.

horrible looking coin and just looking at the date of 1856 makes it even easier to draw a red flag even before noticing anything else

Yes - this lighting really brings out the pitting. But just holding it in hand, with no magnification, it looks pretty good since the flaws are so small.

It's a sad state of affairs that numismatics have come to this, really. Where there's a will, there's a way I think for just about every type of rip-off out there.

Be aware that eventually their fakes will be so good that most dealers will be fooled(some already have been.)Just something else killing numismatics along with TPG greed in slabbing anything, even bullion coins and the lack of grading standards between TPGs. I'm sure few people collect for fun and history anymore. Its all about the Benjamins.

Yeah that is one of his but he must be trying to save his dies. Typically the rims on his fakes are sharper than that.
