As I posted in another thread, I picked up what appears to be a really, really nice 1864 Two-Cent Piece at a coin show yesterday. It has amazing eye appeal, looks to be solid "red" color to me, and was graded by the seller at MS62. According to NusmiMedia, such a coin should be worth around $280. I only paid $80 for it, however (after negotiating down from the dealer's original price of $90). At the time, I didn't realize just how great of a bargain this was. I'm a firm believer in the "if it seems to be too good it probably is" theory of bargains, however, and now that I've looked it up at NumisMedia I am really getting paranoid about "the catch." Has it been harshly cleaned? Do the little dings and scratches I see knock the grade down significantly? Is it, in fact, not even genuine to begin with? Please feel free to be brutal on this coin. I'm hoping it is at least worth the $80 I paid for it, but even if not I have to say it sure does look nice in my 7070 album... Here are some extra large pics:   |

Could have been burnished
I think it's real
I think it's closer to MS 60

Its a dam shame on this coin but it has been harshly mechanically cleaned.
Look at the areas mid Sheild.
The die crack through IN GOD should be far more prominant and the Die crack through the lower left arrow should extend to the date.
The longacre doubling on the United should be way more prminant that its is as indicated by the doubling on the lower left ribbon for this variety.
I will com back with the exact variety once I have landed this afternoon and had a chance to confirm it with my reference books.

I'd call it a cleaned MS-60. Worth around 50-60 IMO

Well, it's starting to look more and more that I slightly overpaid for a really nice type coin for my 7070 album as opposed to getting the bargain of the century...

I think you did just fine on that coin. I think it is genuine but it looks like the surfaces have been messed around with. I think it may have been cleaned or recolored.

I would also say, it has been artificially recolored, but, it still is very nice, and I would say you got it for a good price.  |

Harshly cleaned with AU details. It's a shame someone wanted to clean an otherwise nice coin.

I saw this coin in the other thread and immediately thought the color was off & that it was not an MS coin. I am hoping that nohope587 will elaborate on his comment about the coin being "harshly mechanically cleaned". I generally associate wire brush marks with harshly cleaned.

I'm with you, trdhrdr007! For the price, I can easily accept a cleaned coin, especially since it's for my type album and it has a lot of really sharp detail. "Mechanically cleaned" sounds really ugly, however...

I agree it has been cleaned and recolored, the cleaning may have been done with an ultrsonic bath to remove deep grime, the surfaces also apear to be "worked" burnished seems correct here. I can see a definte color change on the surface as you get farther away from any part that is raised on the designs. All in all, not a horrible price to pay, CoinWeek just raised their pricing for an EF coin to $50.00 and $80-90 for most AU's while it is a common date, it has the Full "D" in United, which is slightly less common than the broken D or partial D. I still like it maybe not at $90 but not far from that price, this coin has a lot of detail and is a variety I haven't found yet myself, and I am trying to get one of every die marriage in the Two Cent series, my main collecting interest, the VAM side of my Morgan dollar collection got me to want to do the same in 2¢ pieces. It has some of the markers for the KF-L2-DDO
ie the crack through the motto and the Crack on the lower left arrow feathers.
But the doubling should be visible on God and there are Die cracks on the rev that are not present on this coin.
I suspect is was chemically treated and then a felt wheel or rotary brush was used on it.

I feel your pain barryg. I have a 1908-S IHC that's in my album that has been cleaned and it bothers me every time I look at my collection. Yours is a beautiful coin with all the meat on the bones but I suspect that it's going to bug you as much s mine bugs me. Oregon coin geek.....*** GO BEAVS ! ! ! ***
