Was browsing on ebay and came across this no reserve auction for a giant antique/coin lot that looks amazing . Bidding is already over $2000, so someone is going to get all this stuff. What does everyone think it will go for?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-lot...69588wt_1398

I couldn't afford it if I wanted to (and I do!), but I can always drool over it and share it with everyone else :-) (hope I'm not breaking the rules by sharing a link )

Something is wrong here. Only a fool would sell a lot like this, as breaking it up into multiple auctions would yield much higher returns with minimal extra effort. Seeing as the seller hasn't sold anything in over a year, I would at first assume this is a hacked account. But, don't those usually use a buy-it-now, to get their payout before they are shot down?

there is something a little odd. It seems like one of those things that is too good to be true. Selling those gold and silver coins individually he would make sooooo much more money.

WOW! Just imagine sorting and cataloging all that. My wife would be happy for 2 reasons. She wouldn't see me for at least one month and she certainly would enjoy the jewelry.

Hey, I am the high bidder now at $2,247.22 woo hoo!

My guess is that this will all get a final high bid of $52,025.00
I bet that the auction will NOT sell or if it does, it will result with the seller getting their first negative feedback.
I think most of the items are really for sale and are actually in the possession of the seller.
Everything probably is worth well over $150,000.00 so they would have been better off having them auctioned off by a major auction house.Only a fool would lose many tens of thousands of dollars to honor a ridiculous low final bid and sell through ebay instead of taking the consequences of pulling it and cancelling all bids.
It may be a test to see what they might end up with in a physical gallery sale. It is also great advertising.
I think I may take some of those images and keep them for wallpaper in my screen saver.
I would certainly honor my high bid which won't last long.

So - I'm thinking final bid will be in the $15-$20K range.

I can't imagine why, that if its totally legit, they wouldn't sell even in smaller lots. Simply cataloging the 90% into smaller lots would have the bids higher than it is now.

If I'm not mistaken, there are just 3 actual gold coins, and several of those gold plated quarter sets.....Right?

After looking through everything and reading, there are only 55 silver coins for sale. There are a bunch of old bills, but nothing of great value. I think the total value of everything there is probably only in the $7k range, off the top of my head. I know nothing of the jewelry, register, art or plates, though. I can't imagine they are worth much otherwise they would be sold separately. It looks like a giant collection of bulk purchased world coins seeded with things of actual value.

Reading the whole listing puts it into perspective. There are 3 1/10th oz gold coins & 55 silver coins. From the pics it looks like maybe 7-10 of the silver coins are silver dollars. Lots of mint sets, but none are worth more than a few dollars. There are 216 bills. I don't have any idea what the $500 is worth, but 160+ are well worn $1 silver certs. With the exception of the 18k ring the rest of the jewelry is low dollar.

I'd be surprised if you could retail the lot for $7k. I won't be surprised if the bidding runs over that. IMO this is a run of the mill lot of older items that has been "seeded" with just enough stuff to get people to bid.

You've proven to have a nose for picking these things out scubu.

Think we should start a request for investigation drive?

Got a lot of mileage out of that one $500 bill. No feedback since 2010? You got some 'splaining to do, Lucy!

I will say that there is roughly 55 US Silver coins in this entire lot so Total of 55 Silver coins I know of.

There are 55 silver coins, however, they are pictured at least 18 times.

I count 26 in one pix.

No FB since May 25 2010. I had to look through almost 150 FB before I found a single FB for an item over $20, just a handful over $10, and lots of 99¢ sales. Yet now we have thousands of $ worth of stuff?

Here are some very nice Indian Head Pennies that are included in this massive lot of coins.

Mostly culls, damaged, cleaned, etc.

I would say there is about 197 1 dollar silver certificates from the 30's and 50's there, so I am sure there is at least 219 old currency bills 158 silver certificates $1 and 61 larger sizes over $1.

Yet there are 29 pix of them, not counting pix of single notes.

Show of hands. How many ccf members have their collections of silver dollars and halves and IHC piled up like these pix? How about you paper money collectors? Anyone collect proof sets in random order?

It has taken us over 2 1/2 Months just to photograph and create this listing,

The net result is a mess that can't possibly bring a good price, unless two Clewless Gnubees™ with more dollars than sense jump on it. It wouldn't have taken much more time to take it from a train wreck to at least break it down into general categories.

Was-On-Ebay-And-Came-Across-This!

Take a look at the frames. Virtually perfect. Originals were wood with overlaid plaster, gold painted, etc. Unless restored regularly in a museum, they dried out, got bumped around, and are missing chunks of plaster. Modern plastic frames don't have that problem.

Observations:

Anyone who has thousands of FB and has taken the time to sell hundreds of 99¢ items surely knows that the likelihood of finding anyone, even a dealer, who is interested in china, a cash register, coins, jewelry and paintings is slim to none. At best, offers are going to be based on one group of items, with the rest going along at sub-wholesale.

Could this be a hacked account? Possibly. ebay can tell better than we can.

No, that's not too good to be true.
The high bidder will definitely get a wakeup call.
