I bid on an ebay item. Then I downloaded all the photos in the largest size to study and I think I made a mistake.

If anyone has time, would you please take a look at eBay item 350547227636 and let me know what you think of the coin.

It's not a big deal, as I only bid $35, but I'd like some expert opinions on the error.

I would just post the photos, but they aren't mine.

Thanks,
Yokozuna (Ben Jenkins)

I won't comment either way on a live auction. But might ask questions:
Why is the reverse flattened under the area in questioned?
Why has no other examples been found?
Why has it not been graded?
Why is the coin thinner?

Thanks Coop.

I understand. I'm looking at the same things you are and I think I know what happened to the coin.

I'm not going to retract my bid because I made a mistake. I'll pay for it if I win. I just bid before looking at all of the photos and feel really stupid for doing that.

*sigh*

The question I would ask is how photoshopped that looks to me.

It's an indisputable fake. The northern arc of the obverse face was struck by a fake die of relatively soft consistency. The same area on the reverse face rested on an unyielding flat surface and was flattened.

This is an educational thread. That explains the soft details.
I would bet this coin is out-of-round too.

If I thought I was misled into making a bid, I would have no problem with retracting my bid. The fact that this seller sells thousands of coins tells me they know what they are doing. The seller also keeps all of their feedback private.

However, I still don't know what is going on with the coin though...I am pretty sure its not a Doubled Die...but I really am not experienced enough to know who, what or why...for all I know it could be legit. Let us know how it works out..

Happy Hunting

Scroll up and look what Mike Diamond said. It is probably some machinist or tool die maker that made a fake die with the words on it and repunched it onto the coin.

It really bothers me when a seller keeps their feedback private.I have never bid on any item unless I know something about the seller.

You can't sell with private feedback. Not allowed.

Jasper, I get the gist of your comment--private auctions. The quality of feedback is qualified by the nature of the auction.
I am well aware that scammers on ebay pad their ratings by conducting meaningless penny-ante auctions for each other--AAAAA++++++!
