I'm sorry to hear that. It means the mintmark was more than likely fasioned into a "D" or, added altogether.
Other ones look good ;)
Where did you get the 16-D if you don't mind me asking?

So where it says "Guaranteed Authentic Only" they just mean it is a 1916 Dime? So, it's fake?

Not at all, it was part of my father-in-laws collection. It came in a old capitol plexiglass holder....

He also had one of them with wheat cents, including the 1909-S VDB which we sold at a auction through Scotsmans in St. Louis, thats why I never thought it would turn out this way. I mean I am no expert but all I see is a little line across the top curve of the mintmark "D'. I just can't believe it.

The dime is authentic, but there was an altered (added) mintmark.

At least your other two (SLQ & T$) show up on the website, where you can obtain some large images of your coins and NGC gave them the same value of $246 each;

That's a good looking set! Too bad about the 1916-D :(
Under a strong loupe, you might be able to see how it was attached.

Wornslick: Would it be possible for you to post a micrograph of the altered mintmark area, so that some of us could offer post mortem opinions of it, and others of us can learn? Perhaps a USB microscope would come in handy.

I am very happy for you that the other two came up trumps! Congratulations!

This is the best I can do with my very limited camera knowledge and a Coolpix L22.

Hopefully someone can do something with the pics to show the mintmark better.

Thanks David, I am starting to see it now, even though I don't want to.

The voice of reason, Mrs. Wornslick, came home about an hour ago. I call her that because she always says the right thing to calm me down whenever I get uptight. She said that now we know that the coin is not correct and whenever we decide to sell our collection we won't unknowingly sell the coin thinking it was real. That would bother both of us alot. She said the cost of the grading and learning it wasn't real was the price of an education, I like that.

I am planning to take the coin to my next coin club meeting and pass it around and let them see it. Hopefully we all will learn something just like I do here.

Wornslick: Now is the time to buy yourself a USB microscope. Even a good one will cost you less then $80.
