I have noticed several D mintmarks that appear to be doubled or appear to have a small D on top of a larger underlying D. I have attached a couple pics of one of these dimes, which happens to be a 64-D.

What causes the mint mark to look like this?

JimR,

This appears to be Mechanical Doubling. Also appears to be on the
oak and olive branches and bottom of torch.

This is caused when the dies become loose during striking.

hope this helps

Thanks for the response.

The doubling I see is Die Deterioration Doubling.

I don't see doubling on anything other than the mintmark, and it's not deterioration doubling. It's simple Machine Doubling. Somewhat common for it to only occur on the mintmark because this is the only part of the design that's placed into the die by hand, and the angles sometimes make the coin and die stick together there only. It's an eject doubling thing.

Jim

take a look at the examples of doubling on this site,, I can see the doubling surrounding some of the devices,, as well as the mint mark .

it's going to take more than a few photos to give coppercoins any competition although Ken's site is also a good source of information
