I've studied all the photos I just can't get it right! Maybe when I actually have one confirmed to compare?

Any of these look like it to you?

If the end of the loop of the 9 is pointing to the bottom of the 7, it's a LD. Simple as that!
Of course just buy one as your reference piece for comparisons.

also, the bottom of the 7 extends below the 0 on a large date and is even with the small date

I couldn't tell them apart until I bought a set and had them side-by-side. When they're next to each-other, the small date is noticeably smaller, in addition to the shape differences. You've got some large dates, so now you have something to compare against.

Something that I have noticed on many of the LD's when compared to the SD's, is that the tail of the seven seems to taper into the field and the SD seems to have a higher relief or sharper edges on the numbers of the date. IMO. after looking at the large dates; you will definitely know a small date when you see it. Good luck on the search.

Look at the loop in the 9. The point of the loop will point to the middle of the 7.

Probably the whole point is to try to score teh small date 70-S from circulation for face value rather than buying it.

It's very tough to find a SD in circulation, although some collectors have done it--good luck!

All good advice, but none better than to simply buy one so you will have one for reference.

Also, your chances of finding one in change are about 100,000 to one. You can almost bet that all the 1970S cents you will find in change are large date.
