How do you guys coin roll hunt?
Seriously I don't see how you guys do it. * It takes an insane amount of time to go to the bank (gas as well) get a box of pennies go back home, open every single roll, separate the copper ones, separate the wheaties, foreign currency, 2009s & union shield pennies. Insane amount of time. Then you have to roll up all the zinc ones (I reuse the ones that come with the pennies, some of you buy rolls just to do this and pay money, some just get them for free at the bank) if your not saving them to bring back to the bank. Some of you even roll up the copper ones and hoard them rolled, some just in a jar. * I get that right now the copper pennies are worth twice their value so you can double their face value. This value however fluctuates. You can't melt them and don't see the law being changed. I get that their people that seriously buy 1 metric tone of pennies for more than their face value, but I would imagine there are very few. Well why not just hoard the zinc ones as well before the change the composition? In due time because of inflation the zinc ones will be worth more than their face value no?
I just don't see how you guys coin roll hunt. I feel as if buying circulated wheaties for a couple cents more off the internet would be worth it due to the amount of time it takes to coin roll hunt. How do you guys support yourself? I know some of you buy like 100 dollars in a penny in one week. I don't see how you have time to do it. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but it takes why to much time the way I'm doing it.
Any advice on how to spend less time coin roll hunting? I'm clearly doing something wrong.

I maybe do a box of pennies a week. I don't re-roll em like you do. I take the Zincolns back to the bank in an old bank bag and they run em through the counter and give me cash back. I have a 5 gallon bucket probably half full of coppers. I keep any wheats I find for an album and just keep upgrading them as I go along. I enjoy doing it and that's the secret to life. If you don't enjoy it, don't do it. Do what makes ya happy !

my first thought was, " are you a bank teller?"
lol...
anyway, I see your argument. everyone of us that coin roll hunt would tell you that the thrill of the hunt is what keeps us coming back. as far as trips to the bank go, as for me, its on the way home from work, so its not out of the way..even my dump bank is on the way TO work.. so gas is not an issue....
if we are strictly talking about coin hunting pennies, which we may or may not be, pennies seem the most profitable, when your not finding the monster halves box or 1 silver dime per $100 searched.....pennies have the most varieties which also make the hunt more thrilling. why not pay a few cents more to just buy bags of whats? what fun is that!@? unless its an unsearched lot, which many are just fakes. the copper, well, once I accumulate 2x$25 boxes, I get a decent profit. last sale was $86.
as for re-rolling and such, well, that is a pain. I dont have the luxury of bagging them or going to a free coin counter. re-rolling is kind of relaxing to me anyway. but with an 8 month old boy, I have little time to do ANYTHING...so my coin roll hunting has been at a minimum.

I usually roll hunt double eagles. Keeping the shiny ones and spending the rest. But I see your point.

Don't do it if you don't like it. I'm 23, broke, and it costs practically nothing. It seems to me you don't understand the sport. For me its about rescuing a piece of history from further circulation. Why don't you try buying a box of whatever denomination, and go through it at your own pace? It's not a race, its supposed to be fun!

I like to search rolls of pennies mainly for the thrill of it. I enjoy it. I don't do it for profit. When I get a box or two of pennies, I might only open one or two rolls at a time and then sit and go through them. The thrill of the hunt is what makes me keep coming back for more. For me, it's kinda like fishing or hunting. The thrill of the hunt is what I enjoy. I sure as heck don't do it to acquire "free" meat to stock the freezer. It's a lot cheaper to buy meat at the grocery store if that were the goal. The same logic applies to coin roll hunting. At least in my opinion anyway...

To butcher a Thoreau quote: Quote: Many men go coin roll hunting all of their lives without knowing it is not coins they are after.

It's fun! I go through up to $100 in cents per week. And I do reroll them. I can reroll an entire box in about 30 minutes, so that doesn't kill much time. It's the thrill of the hunt; you never know what you might find. It's like a lottery scratch ticket that costs nothing.

I suppose if you don't enjoy searching through rolls of coins it would be a hassle. Maybe fishing is more suitable for time consumption. When you enjoy doing something it is not work and something to be endured. It is fun. I collect coins but don't search rolls anymore. I have so many coins, I ought to search through them once but I suppose I am procrastinating. I have to be in the mood and have the time. Right now it is summer, I will probably get scarce on here and spend more time in the boat and on the river fishing and swimming. Driving the bus is over in 3 more days, that is and was work and something to endure and it was a hassle. I can understand these guys enthusiasm in looking through many rolls a week. I have done it and it did pay off.

In my first box of pennies that I bought on my way home from school several months ago, I found an 1890 Indian Head penny, back then I thought I hit the jackpot and ran around the neighborhood screaming in joy...I'm no longer about to buy boxes of pennies because I don't have a car and the burden of transporting them in a backpack is just too much :)

It is fun. I get a little sense of excitement every time I flip a '92 LMC over to see if it's a CAM, haven't found one yet. I also have a 5 year old daughter who gets a kick out of looking at coins with me. She tells everyone that we are detectives of money and I have no idea where or how she came up with that. LOL

I'm going on 5 years now (after a 30-year hiatus) and it is all about the hunt. I may do $1,500 dimes at a sitting, and that takes me 2+ hours or so, and a half an hour to drive and dump. No date-searching in my book. I admit I don't search as much lately but, dirtfishing takes up precious spare time also.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

I'm with you greenprint, I don't really get it. I love that it's by far the cheapest way to enjoy the hobby, but it can be a drag too. The strangest thing is how many different reasons people do the same thing. Some look for silver or copper, some look for dates and mint marks, some look for errors. The hardest part is finding something you can enjoy again and again. I only do a few rolls at a time because it can be a pain going through them all, maybe finding nothing, and then putting them in wrappers again. But next to my computer are a few of my favorites from some pennies, so obviously I found a little something. Just keep searching for what you want. Oh, and being rich always helps too.
