What to do, what to do? After a long search I finally bought this 1854-O half dollar off ebay on a Buy It Now for $79. This is the last seated coin I need for the Dansco 7070. The seller rated it a VF-30. I got the coin today and it has really nice original surfaces. I like it, but on the reverse, by the eagles head are some scratches. One scratch starts on the rim and goes through the eagles head. This defect was not described and the seller has offered me a refund. I know this is a vague and rhetorical question, but would you keep it or return it? The scratches aren't readily visible except with a strong direct light. So much of what I have looked at in this price range has been harshly cleaned or worse and this coin has some eye appeal. Can I lower my standards here? I am also just a little bothered by the indistinct E in Liberty - strange - maybe weak strike? All advice welcome.

Colin

I think if it bothers you now,it will bother you later. What we might do could be answered either way depending on the person, but I think you already answered your own question Colin.

I know in the back of my mind I would always be looking to replace it.but thats just me.

Colin,

I would return it. For one I think the coin grades Fine. Liberty is not complete. Based on ANA standards and my coin values edition showing Seated halves a full liberty is a pre-requisite for the VF grade.

Given my grade assumption and the scratch on the reverse I would return it for a refund.

On the flip side it looks like it has nice original surfaces.

Hope this helps.

Return it. It's a common coin and you'll find another nice one. The scratch would eat away at me.

You folks are correct, all I'll ever see are the scratches and I also thought the grade was optimistic because of the partial liberty. I just bought a 1877-S in AU-50 that was going to make this one look kind of worn next door to it in the album anyway. The seller, who seems to be an outstanding Ebayer, offered me a substantial discount, but I am going to eat the shipping and insurance and send it back. The search continues. My Dansco 7070 holes are now all filled except for four coins - the SL Half with arrows, the Reeded capped bust half dollar and both SL Dollars. Not sure how I will ever afford problem free VF SL Dollars even if I could locate any, but I'll keep trying. Peace.

Colin
