I have not researched Mercs very much at all. But, wow...NICE coin. Believe this might be as high as XF.
Please....tell us 20x face value!

It's too dark and grainy to be sure of the all diagnostic details, but that's the wrong mint-mark style in addition to having the general appearance of a cast coin.

I agree with the others, this one does not look genuine.

it might be the pics, but it reminds me of the Chinese copy I got when they were on ebay. There looks to be an extra edge to the outer rim just like on mine (especially on the REV). ... or am way off ?

I do not believe this is a genuine US mint coin. I'm not an expert on the 1916-D Mercury diagnostics ... although I can say with some certainty that a genuine 1916-D mint mark of a different shape than what is shown on this example. Regardless of my lack of specific expertise on this coin ... I have seen enough cast copies of coins to state that IMHO this coin is counterfeit. Hoping you did not pay too much. David

As my fellow CCF members said: "I would NOT touch this one with a ten feet pole"!

EXCELLENT BOYS!
you guys good
the surprise is I paid $5 for it....hmmmm, wonder why so cheap?
I am filling my Dime set and I want a 1916-D in that album for now so a fake will have to do until I have $1000 to spend on a coin
what gives the cast look away? mint mark is a box and thats a no-no correct?

Like others have said, the coin looks very grainy which is a good indicator of a copy.
Glad to hear you didn't shell out a lot of money for this one.

The bumpy, grainy texture and lack of fine detail is what make it look cast. A type-of-1916 mintmark should be smaller, and the center should be less open, but instead more of a narrow triangular slot. This has the mintmark position for the four dies. Glad to hear you didn't spend much on it.

the "d" is all wrong, more obvious than the rough look of a corroded coin in determining a fake in my opinion

The bad part about all these Chinese counterfeits is that they will be turning up in collections for the next couple generations. Many people that know very little about coins will be easily fooled. Some newbies may even give up on coins totally after getting burned by one of these things.
I prefer looking at an empty hole in an album rather than have one of these pieces of garbage in mine.
