This question blows my mind, other than patriotism why are these so popular among stackers over maples?
I don't understand why it is not the other way around
+ Gold Maples carry a lower premium
+ Gold Maples are .9999 pure gold while Eagles are 22KT gold
+ Gold Maples are produced in lower numbers than eagles

No but seriously. It's not so much patriotism but the fact that since the majority of bullion numismatists are from the US that they want to keep US coins because we are sheltered little people that like to stay in our comfort zone. |

The simple fact that people will overwhelmingly buy their own countries coins over other coins.
Plus from a design perspective Gold Eagles absolutely destroy the gold maple.

Agree with basebal...they are incredible looking coins. The Maples are boring in comparison.

 Also, one of your points would have to be discarded if it were the other way around. If more people picked maples over eagles, the maples would have a higher premium. |

I can understand picking the coin based on looks.
But lets be real here, this is a precious metals section of the board and when it comes to actual metal content it boggles my mind that anyone would pay more for 22kt gold coin than for a .9999 gold coin. It's like skipping past a nice mercedes and buying a ford.

At the end of the day they both have 1 oz of gold in them so your getting the exact same thing from a purely bullion perspective |

If I regularly bought gold coins/bullion, I would stick with the Gold Eagle only because they have less premium for me.

Just one guy's opinion.
I think for the stackers it may come down to recognition for the common person. Here's a sample scenario: After the SHTF and our economy collapses our money will be worthless. So say at that time you need some new kitchen cabinets. You hire a contractor and tell him that you have two gold coins to pay him. If he's Joe Sixpack contractor here in the US, he'll look at the Maple Leafs and kinda scratch his head. But with Gold Eagles, he'll gladly accept the job. He'll be less likely to care about 4 nines pure. The name on the coin will say it all.
Second, I would think that there are more Eagles than Maples produced because there are 314 million Americans and just less than 35 million Canadians. Just the laws of supply and demand.
Next, the 22K composition of the Eagles makes them a little more scratch resistant than the softer 24K Maple Leafs, so they'll hold up better over time.
Finally, just say the words Gold Eagle to yourself. Then say Gold Maple Leaf. Which is easier and rolls of the tongue nicely? We're inherently lazy. Why waste time with all those extra syllables?

All that being said, I still want to get my hands on a Maple Leaf one of these days to add to my stack. There's something to be said for diversity. Plus my wife is Canadian, so I'll probably have an easier time convincing her to get more gold if it's a Leaf.
