Quote: @Dave L, this is really HANDSOME!
What's the date of issue? That note was issued in 1997. It was part of a series of banknotes featuring explorers. Most of them were quite nicely done as this one is.

This was a tough choice . I will go with this old South Africa 1 pounder. I think it looks very pleasing.

There are a few I could have choosen, but I've plumped for this one. Germany, 1910 100 Mark. It's value is probably only about 50p but I think the artwork is amazing.

It's a small world Bacchus! I just got one of those the other day and I thought "Ah, handsome note." but you beat me to it. Love the line of ships of the new German Navy prior to WWI.

I like a lot of banknotes from this era from central Europe - Germany, Hungary etc, the bombastic imagery is fantastic. Funny how the regions notes have went from some of the most interesting to the most boring (the Euro) in 100 years :)

Hi, a tough decision but I've always loved this note - and it's one that I bought in the first year or so of collecting. Only the front for now. Its a bit over-edited but comes from scans I made when sorting out the collection. Its a very colorful AU condition note, a 1 Yuan of the Farmers Bank of China of 1935. Superb classical scenes of rural life on the front (probably from an antique scroll painting). Alot I could have chosen but in the end it was a choice between this, the red 1948 100 Yuan of Thailand or the French style Laos 100 Kip of 1957. This won finally as my chief obsession is the Chinese notes.

Thanks James4444, glad you like it. Many amazing notes have been issued within China, and even many of the less attractive looking items have interesting historical associations. According to some estimates there are over 60,000 different notes (not even including the symbolic 'hell' notes). Anyway - here's the back of that 1935 Farmers Bank note:
