So I am developing a toned penny collection and was wondering everyone's opinion on whether to build it out of 2x2 holders and 3 ring binder pages or getting a dansco plain cent album. Thanks!
BTW I am really surprised by the many different colors you can find for toned pennies.....from red to purple to rainbow to green..........I LOVE COLLECTING! lol

if you are only doing cents, Dansco would be my choice. If however you will expand your collection to other coin types, 2x2 holders in a 3-ring binder may be the way to go

From what I can determine from your question, I would suggest staying with 2X2s in a binder. The reasons are: that you may have several coins of the same year and mint with several different colors that you may change your mind and replace a coin here and there that flexibility of presentation trumps static presentation. Example, on one day you might like to present all of the coins with the same color. On a different day you might want to display a single date and mint with a range of colors. I remember reading once that a collector of Indian Head cents had four complete sets: Red, Red-Brown, Brown and Misc. ALL uncirculated. I LOVE Dansco albums, but I do not let any album maker to tell me how to collect or what is needed to be "complete" set.

I have an album full of 2x2's for my toned coins, but I have different denominations. If I got enough of each, I would transfer them to a Dansco. If you're only doing cents, you just can't beat the presentation of a Dansco. They make one simply labeled cents, so duplicate toners wouldn't be a real issue.

I use ex trade catalog 4 ring binders. With 4 holes, the pages have a lessened tendency to tear out at the holes, when loaded with coins.
The downside, which is acceptable to me, is that the covers have trade info. printed on them.

3 ring binder with the 20 slots for 2x2's. I'm just not a fan of Dansco.

For this subject though I can not see any possible thing to do except using those 2x2's and those 20 slotted pages put in a 3 ringed binder. So much ability to move coins around. And too as already noted, you may want to start separating by color, per page. Or even year and Mint from page to page. And as your collection grows you may want to start adding Nickels, Dimes and more. Not sure but I think you can get 3 ringed binders up to serveral inches thick.

For toned copper the only sound choice is to use airtite holders. Using ANYTHING else will allow too much air to get to the coin and cause it change. The idea with storing toned copper is to make it stay exactly how it looks today. That can only be done with very strong storage techniques.

I too am a big Dansco fan. And have been thinking about some of the toned coins .. I have a lot of toned nickels.
In this case I am thinking of doing how BadThad is doing it. One - Because I agree with him that the airtite's would preserve the tone better, just as it looks.
Two - I have more than one denomination of tone coins. I think they would look good in airtite's put into dollar 2X2's
I do think I would put them into the 2X2 dansco binder. So it would match the rest of my Dansco's

Holy crap thats an awesome toned coin.....I think I will take pictures of all my toned coins this weekend. Thanks for the tips. I think I am going to go with 2x2s and a 4 ring binder. I don't mind the coins changing....I think that is part of the fun is seeing how they will change. I will, of course, store them in an area I try to keep moisture out of with several silica gel packs. More to come....and thnx!

Quote: For some reason this forum is stuck on Dansco brand I like some of their products but they definitely have a good amount to complain about. In terms of the actual look though and not taking into account what they do or dont include, the color scheme and design does give the best presentation imo. I do wish they had used a different color for the cents though. The brown is great against silver coins but the cents get lost a little bit with it

I admit, I love my my Lincoln Dansco. However, most of my Lincoln Cents are circulated and brown. If I were to build a high end set of full red or toned cents, I would use Air Tites as suggested.

Quote: the color scheme and design does give the best presentation imo. Regardless of who is saying what about Albums, that is the one thing most brag or mention. Then those are the same people that hide them all away do to thefts. Many are stuffed in home safes, safe deposit boxes, hidden walls, etc. So no one sees them anyway. Yet that is the first thing people say about Dansco. I'll stick to any Album I can get free or cheap. No one except me sees them so who why the necessity for Dansco. And as already noted Lincoln Cents just don't stand out in a brownish Album.
