What a sack of finds!! Is that a proof 1964 kennedy I see?
I used to work at Safeway as a courtesy clerk doing basic slave work around the store and pulling in carts from the parking lot. I was often bagging groceries at the end of the checkout stands, and there was a coinstar against the back wall behind me. Everytime I passed the machine, I checked the reject bin and the tray for leftover change that wasn't pushed into the machine. In the three months that I worked there, I never had any stunning finds. A couple silver dimes, and a lot of gum change and foreign coins.
One day the reject tray was filled to the top, almost overflowing. I scooped out all the coins inside, and stuffed them in my apron pocket. It was all 1960's-1980's German coins. The rest of the night I was hauling around a couple pounds of German pocket change in my apron.
I pulled a War Nickel from those donation boxes at the end of the checkout counter. I had to flip the entire box upside down repeatedly to get the nickel through the small drop-in hole. The store was packed and lines were long, so I was in a tight spot, but I finally got the silver nickel. Don't worry, I ran to my car to grab another nickel, replacing the one I took. There were cameras everywhere in the store, and I didn't want it to appear like I was stealing.
I don't want to hijack the thread, I just was recalling an interesting time of my life.
