I was just wondering if people collect these. I do not hear about them that often so was not sure if it is common or not. I think they are unique.

Lots of pictures.....

Yours is gorgeous. I was wondering what a mint red one would look like. Mine are all brown.
Thanks for sharing.

those are nice looking coins. I have never really looked for them before but I may have to get a couple nice examples, just to have.

Thanks. I find them here and there. Didn't think much of it at first. Then the more I saw them, the more I liked them. I've had the older ones for years. The newer ones are from finding in circulation.

If "woodgrain" or "woodies" weren't a term used before, congrats to the OPs for introducing a much needed term!

It's referred to as improper alloy mixture.

I really like the look of them, but do not collect them. I saw one that had an extreme woodgrain effect earlier today that caught my eye. I'm not going to buy it, but I really like the look.

As vermontensium noted above, the woodgrain effect is cause by the metal alloys in the planchet not being completely mixed together properly. Although the cent pictured looks very dark, in reality, it is much lighter than the picture shows. I also have a 1909 VDB w/ tiger stripes...
