Why doesn't the mint just stop producing the half dollar? They are seldomly used and not mainstream as they were decades ago. I really can't see why the production continues other than for collectors. But I don't think that is enough to warrant the production. Heck, there isn't even a section for them in the cash registers!

There is in the one-armed bandits though!

I think they should change the design and not let the coin die as a tribute to any one President. It amazes me that people still think the Kennedy half is a rarity regardless of the date? I saw clad Kennedy circulated halves bring $70 at an estate auction last summer. Couldn't help but wonder what those folks were thinking? Of course the worn out Barber quarters (no keys) brought an astonishing $170 per roll so needless to say I didn't get those either as my $40 bid was just a little short. It is apparent, if you really want to make big money on worn out common date coins get them consigned in an estate auction! The results are unbelievable!

There was a little circulation of the half dollar until the early '80's, and then these were still used in casinos until the mid-'90's. They have no real usage anymore and they accumulate in fed warehouses. None have been issued since 2001 and most of the '98 to '01 mintages are still in storage. These are being sold to collectors now so it constitutes a small profit center for the mint.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Since most of our coinage is undergoing changes or have changed in the recent years, what's in store for the half and the dime?

The current law requires a half dollar to be minted, and there is not a single person in congress who will want their name linked with trying to remove Kennedy.

What's the big deal anyways? Was this the same situation when Franklin was removed?

Kennedy is considered American royalty. There are still many people who love this man, and remember where they were that Nov. day. If any elected leader was to write a bill to remove the half, they would be hunting for a job.

Does this mean there will be no design changes period? Or are we stuck for eternity with the same design?

The easiests way around that job hunt ND is talking about would be to introduce legislation to remove ALL Presidents from our coinage. Commemorate them on the paper notes and do something constructive with our coinage. We don't need the Presidents on both!

No offense to President Kennedy, but most folks have not really looked up the facts about his life and times.[:0] The facts are very disconcerting. IMHO, his life was actually much more controversial then Ben Franklin’s ever was! We embraced youth and “Camelot”, and turned our heads away from reality. Mike Terry, I'm with you 100% with your idea!

I don't think the half dollar should be discontinued. I think it needs to actually be used. Perhaps the reason they are not in circulation is that when someone gets one they save it. Last year (on holiday) I went to a bank to get a couple rolls of half dollars from a bank in Mass. I was shocked to hear they didn't have any half dollar coins.
If every coin collectors could get them from banks and spend them, the will start to circulate again. Except everyone who hasn't seen one for years will tuck it away in a drawer. LOL
The other American rarity is the $2 note. Hard to get, and when someone gets one, it's saved.

There is a bill in front of congress to make the quarter design permanent, the half dollar, the dime, and the cent. Looks as if we and our great grandchildren will be forced to see dead presidents.

I just do not understand what the government has against change for crying out loud! Why does every coin have to be the same for eons? They're certainly not doing collectors any favours. Some of actually care what our coins look like. I say go back to liberty heads and buffalos, things like that are very american and I feel those would represent us well.

I Quote National Dealer from another thread... "Obviously there are no citizens of Ohio that have concerns over high gas prices, high medical costs, high realestate prices, taxes, traffic, unemployment, crime, homelessness, welfare, social security, terrorism, economic concerns, or anything else that plaques the American people of the other 49 states." Why is the government concerned enough to put up a Bill to prevent changes in coin currency design in the sometime distant future? What is wrong with the existing laws that control this? With all the problems facing the people is this what the government thinks it was elected to fix? I agree with NDS76, the older designs are more attractive. Bring back The Indian Head pennyThe Bufflo Nickel The Mercury dimeThe Standing Liberty quarterThe Walking Liberty half dollarand The Morgan dollar.

Er has anyone thought about going back to real money you know the stuff it was made from gold and silver or the paper stuff could be exchanged for gold or silver at the banks. Now its all funny money and of no value ... Kennedy now he was a some president and the only one I know that was assasinated twice, once in Dallas and again by the media when the people refused to believe the lies and cover up in the warren report. I may live in Australia but I'mglad I own a Kennedy half dollar plus some others only disappointed that its not pure silver. If kennedy was still alive all our currency would be backed by silver like he attempted to do...Gee I would like to get my hands on one of the silver certificates he introduced and upset the banksters with ...
