I am not at home so no picture. I am curious if a note missing the 6th number has any value. It is missing on both sides.
1974 (Atlanta) SN 36242 99
It is out in the truck right now ... I am thinking AU maybe CU.
I am going to keep it ..but they have four more, where the sixth number goes from weak to no number. I bought the no number one.
If they have good value I might buy the others. Edited by GR58 10/12/2012 6:51 pm

I would say yes they would be worth more than face value. I am not sure how much more but I have seen stuck digits where one serial is 1 number higher than the next one sell for quite a bit so I would think a missing number would be the same way

If they are legit I would buy them all, price dependent of course.

Sounds interesting.
Are both serial numbers missing a digit?
And, if I understand you correctly, the others are in sequence with the error progressing along the way. So I would get them all.

Here is the pictures of the note Of the other four notes only one of them has the sixth digit completely gone .. like this on. yes all five notes are sequential. I was offered to buy the one, I may be able to buy the rest .. I think they are hoping I find out what they are worth. Edit - I don't think I stated that very well .. I went back after lunch to see about buying the rest .. I did not want to seem too excited about buying the rest .. that can affect the price. I will check next week .. I am sure I can at least get pics of the rest.

Very cool looking - no idea of value. I like the two numbers to the left of the gap

Very cool looking note. Dropped number notes are neat depending on which digit is dropped. Personally I would not wait, by the time you go back they might be gone.

This is "under inking of a single digit"
I have some partial under inked $2's like this...for what ever reason it is always the same digit that is under inked on both sides.
edit below
as per grade...I see both bottom corner dings...Au +... and as Nick stated it all depends on the price.

GR, Since you said there are others that have a weak 6th digit, is it a 6? It looks like the lower serial has the faintest hint of a 6 for the missing digit. Pretty cool bill though. Definitely a keeper. It's amazing that the same digit on both serials is missing.

Notice the same digit under inked on both sides (pic below). There are a few notes out their where the entire SN is under inked on both sides. Seen it a lot with older (small head) $5's. IMO, these are not common on newer series notes due to all the sensors etc the BEP uses these days during production runs. I would buy 2 or 3 notes in sequence to keep it as a set...which is what I normally do as sequential errors (even minor errors) are very tough to locate.

Interesting that on my note and your two notes ... the weak digit has a "2" and "9" on each side. Oh .. nice $2.00 notes thanks for posting ..
What do you think notes like this trade for .. I would like to make a offer on the rest .. but don't want to over pay

Raw errors are a dicey game...I have seen notes like this go for $50 or so in retail (raw). It would depend upon what your end goal here is...is it for a collection OR a flip. Normally when I buy or sell I stay between the bid and ask...as most of the times I am buying or selling at that price point to a collector and vice versa. I sold a bunch of over inked $2 errors for around 35% of retail to a dealer in bulk. He has to have them graded etc and should be able to double or triple his investment on the whole deal. I could have sold them individually but did not want the hassle... still have a few more of those errors and waiting to see what this dealer gets for those errors on ebay someday. $2 error notes are in a league of their own...meaning the premium is a lot higher and I mainly focus on $2's currently. To circle back I would stay under $20 per note if that's helpful.

Ceylon ..thank you for the detailed answer.
most notes I buy are for my collection. sometimes, if I know another collector wants something, I will sell or trade then. Of course when I buy complete collection, then I keep what I like and sell the rest.
I am pretty sure I can pick up the rest of these notes for much less than $20 per note ... I will have to look at them more this coming week.
