Picked up this coin today for my US type set. It was the hardest one on my wallet, and I also thought it was too nice to pass up for a classic head large cent. What grade would you give it?

nwc,
I find it somewhat difficult to fully detect from this photo the presence or not of this coin's mint luster.
In your opinion from the advantage of being able to see this coin in person what percentage of the original mint luster remains?
I may be able to opine a better educated guess once this information is given.
Thanks,

This one is actually in the mail to me right now. Let's pretened it's light on luster. That's what I'm expecting. Here was the dealer's description:
Overall, this coin has great eye appeal, all original, great strike, nice chocolate brown â€" looks a little undergraded to me. It has a couple very tiny light specks on the neck, more like toning, not distracting. There are a couple very tiny dings just below the bottom curl and a light mark between 8 and 9 stars, again nothing distracting at all and consistent with the grade.

Holy Wow! Rockin coin! From the pics I will say AU58:) From the sellers description it sounds better to me, but the pics are showing me stars and leaves with a bit of wear (IMHO). Still, very very nice! I have an 1812, that might go G4 details. Wanna trade?

I will say this graded VF-35. In actuality, I was thinking this could grade EF. Sweet coin!

just a wild guess then: AU-50
Since PCGS is grading it, it will probably conservatively stay out of the MS zone having only 'light luster'.

If that's the actual label in the background, they are way off in my opinion! I'll guess AU50 too.

@ Vermontensium. Shhhhh. That's why I couldn't pass on it even thought it hurt my wallet badly. My plan is to resubmit.

yeah I will join in and say VF-35 is a very harsh grade for that coin if it looks anything like those pictures and I don't see how a picture could add detail. If you got it for VF-35 money you did very well in my opinion. I will agree with XF-45 at least and have no idea how they got that grade. Must have hired a blind grader or an EAC member for that day or something

It does appear to have EF-45 detail at a minimum. For it to be graded only 35 I would assume it has some defect that led PCGS to give it a "net grade"; however, anything severe enough to drop it by 10 points (or more) should also have relegated it to a "problem" slab. Based on these images the assigned grade is a real puzzler.
I presume your best bet for a higher grade will be to crack it out and submit raw. Of course you run the risk that whatever caused PCGS to give it such a low initial grade will this time be judged to be a problem. You would then have a "Genuine" coin with a details grade. Please keep us posted on your progress!
By the way, it sure looks like an excellent example for a type set. It's head and shoulders above most Classic Head cents.

I don't think I'll be able to crack and resubmit this one. Ill likely just take the chance of resubmitting in the slab one time to see if they will upgrade it that way. Too much of a gamble to crack if it came back in a details slab (even though I think that chance is low)
I also like the coin a ton even in a vf35 slab... It isn't one I'm planning on selling. I did have to pay 40/45 money for it, but since these come along so rarely in nice condition and without issues, I still jumped on it.

PCGS says VF35, you can see part of the label in the photo above. xxx64.35/261780. So guess I cheated. The coin looks far nicer than only 35.

Nah, an EAC grader would have gone 35/50 :-)

He showed this to me and I told him to grab it as fast as possible, after getting some angled pics and checking it out of course : )

Actually almost looks AU...but VF35. The surfaces might not be superb which could have resulted in a net grade.
