I was born in 1959 and remember every now and then finding a Buffalo nickel or a Mercury dime in circulation when I would buy candy as a little kid. I don't remember ever seeing an IHC. About that time, I also recall my dad showing me a Franklin half and marveling at it.

But it's been decades since I've found a classic coin in circulation. I'm curious as to what classic coins you used to see in earlier times (obviously this will vary depending on your age), and also when was the last time you found one in circulation?

I work in big box retail. The cashiers always give me interesting coins they come across. They have provided me with 3 dateless buffaloes in the last 2 weeks.

Look on the roll hunting threads. You will see what some people have found.
I have found dozens of buffalos, with and without dates. Mercury dimes too, as well as Liberty nickels (3)

i havent yet found an IHC but there are a lot of folks who have. Also, the JFK thread has some great franklin and wlh finds.
a few people have found SLQ, but they are few and far between

I found a 1906 Indian cent in a roll of pennies last year.
It was only in Good condition, but still - over 100 years old.

I've never came across anything other than buffalos in circulation. I have a buddy who work as a teller at BOA and tells me he has to explain to people the actual value of the coins they came to get cash for multiple times a week.

Found a Merc today in some customer wrapped rolls. I've found 2 buffaloes and some Pre-1965 dimes over the last few months. The buffaloes from CWR and half of the dimes from CWR and half from the registers at work.

When you speak of "rolls," where exactly do the coins inside come from? I'm not sure rolls qualifies as "found in circulation."

I'm a lucky kid... I've gotten an 1885 V-Nickel (abet corroded) from a roll, a pair of AU-MS 1967 Nickels (along with a bunch of circulated pennies ) and two ounces of silver from circulation within the last six months. Those two ounces include a Morgan dollar and a Newfie Fishscale

I started to collect (although I have hoarded for years) 6 months ago.. so this all has been found in 6 months

I remember finding buffaloes rather often and plenty of Indian cents also. I even remember seeing some Barber coins and one walking liberty in change but that is about it that I remember in my lifetime and I was born in 1970. These are just the coins I remember as everyone knew that as soon as we found something like this it was to go to my Grandfather and these are ones I found and the reason it stuck in my mind was because I remember being excited that I had found something he may get excited about

5 cent silver from Newfoundland.. Newfoundlanders are also known as Newfies (as in I am the son of a Newfie)

and a fishscale is so called as it is very small... like a fish's scale

Wow this thread makes me feel old. We only kept the Walking Liberty halves, Standing Liberty quarters and Mercury dimes, everything else went back in the rolls and back to the bank for more rolls. Everything was silver and the Franklin half, Roosevelt dime and Washington quarter books could be filled from change except for the elusive mintmarked 1932 quarters. The only walkers I never found in change were the 16s, 21, and 21d, although the 1916-1919 halves were all pretty well worn.

i was born in Canada in 1955 as a kid we used to regularly get King George VI 1 cents through 50 cents in change and occasionally George V 1 through 50 cent coins. More uncommon but still in circulation where King Edward and Queen Victoria 10, 25 and 50 cent coins. We used to go on shopping trips and vacations across the border to the US in the early and mid sixties and I remember always seeing Buffalos and Mercuries in change as well as regular Standing Liberty quarters and Walking Liberty halves. I thought these coins looked so bueatiful. Thanks to my kind parents who always gave them to me I guess so I would quit bugging them for them. What I do recall is never finding an Indian Head in circulation

I'm your age. I grew up in Northern California. Buffaloes were common enough. Not every day, but not that uncommon. Mercs were also seen often enough. Franklins were seen up till the mid 80's. IHC were seen very infrequently but since I saved all of them that I found, I can tell you exactly how many I found in circulation; 3. Barbers were still out there, but very rare. I have one SLQ from then. And a half dozen walkers from then. Lastly 5 silver dollars. Though I they were more common and it was just that I never had much money at that time, and a dollar was a lot of money for a kid in the 60s and 70s. Heck you could still buy GSA dollars then, for that matter.
