I didn't pay very much at all for this coin so I'm not out much. My question for you all is....what did they put on the coin to make it look like it has orange luster ? In hand it has a very unnatural look to it and I knew from their pics that it wasn't a problem free coin but I like to learn. Is there a product that they put on the coin to give it that orange appearance ? It looks bad up close....

Improper white balance in the camera used to photograph it. Most "fails" in that area show the coin with too much yellow.

That's the actual color of the coin. It's that bad.

Urk.

I wonder if the alloy is slightly improper or poorly-mixed - that's more a nickel tarnishing color than copper.

It's something that's been applied to the coin to create a fake orange look.

Maybe so, but it's kinda hard for me to imagine someone dumb enough to think that's a "natural" look to apply to a coin. I've been surprised before, though....

Hmm... The first that came to mind was rust stains like it had been sitting at the bottom of a wishing well. Other than that, I don't know.

Looks like metal dust powder I scrape off rusted metal from the printing press.

I agree with DOubl3Eagle, looks like it has had water damage or been sitting in a damp environment.
Rest in Peace

Just guessing but maybe it got held in a flame. The cleanest spots will turn all sorts of colors depending upon how long the copper is held in a flame but the dirty spots will stay brown or turn brown.

I have no idea what they could have used to turn the coin that color but there are allot of things out there that people can apply to a coin that would do different things to it, it is just almost impossible to narrow it down to one thing they applied to it. I have never seen anything others have tried that would even come close to that color on a copper coin so I am at a loss on this one

Yeah I can't figure it out either. I sent it back to him. He's still selling them and I would imagine some people are going to be upset.
