Stopped by the LCS yesterday and picked up a 2008W ASE. It is a PF70DCAM from ANACS. It is numbered 543 out of 949 and came in a rosewood box. Not something I would normally splurge on but I was spending my hoard of presidential/sac dollars. Also got a 1965 Canadian Mint set for $120 combined. Picked up a roll of Roosevelts for $112.50. A little back of melt.

This displaces the 2010 ASE Proof as the most I have paid for a single oz of silver.

i don't understand why you spend so much on bullion, I know its graded at Proof 70 deep cameo but will you ever see 120$ if you decided to re-sell it. numismatics I believe should stick to coins and bullion stick to bullion. but if its for a type set or simply just because you want one, than I understand :)

I saw a 1996 ASE for sale (I don't think anything special about it) for $65 on Craigslist but was gone when I emailed. I know it's $19 more than a generic one but it would have made me happy to have it. I'll just keep on the lookout. For a few extra bucks you can buy some fun and unique stuff and actually spend some time inspecting it, talking about it etc, why not? What's the cost of a movie ticket these days?

An ASE is still a coin, a very beautiful one at that. Why shouldnt they be collected like other coins? Just because most people treat them like bullion whats stopping people collecting them for their beauty? In that case I see no reason someone shouldnt fork out big money for a perfect coin.

jake-the $120 included the Canadian 80% set. Those are some beautiful coins and make some of the mid-60s US mint sets I have look kind of crappy.

This is not one of my regular purchases. I normally don't go over spot +$3 on ASEs. I can't talk myself into the two ASE set graded in NGC 69 from my other LCS for $225.

i totally understand as I did own a lot of high premium 1 ounce bullion coins (panda, taku, ect) just didn't know people collected ASE's like they do coins, here in Canada they don't really collect regular CSM, its the wildlifes, and privy coins!

I've paid in the high $30s for the Wildlife Series coins. They are very nice and a couple of those bring a higher premium even though they are classified as bullion.

So you think that all proof proof versions of Eagles, Pandas, Libertads ......... have no numismatic value and are no more valuable than spot plus ? Hmmm ......interesting.

I would really love to have one of these rare ASEs, but I don't think I am ready or knowledgeable enough to know how to find the right deal on upper end coins.

If I do want to combine purchasing a bullion ASE with a "collector's" added value, at what condition (for a common date) should I feel comfortable paying 5-10% over spot? Can I find a nice MS condition or is the coin worth that price regardless?

I hope I am not taking this thread too much off-topic.

The W version of the ASE actually isn't considered to be a bullion coin here in the US. There are bullion ASEs for sure but all the ones with the mint marks on them are numismatic coins that do have added value. Theres several different types of ASEs uncirculated, proof, reverse proof and the bullion. Some of which go for real big money.

Not sure if Canada has the same thing with the Maples though

The collector ones generally dont fluctuate as much as the bullion ones with the price of silver. You need to see significant movement for them to change as opposed to a few cents or a dollar.

For most of them you can get MS69s for fairly cheap, the older ones 69 is the top grade for some of the series and command big premiums. The newer ones get the big value for perfect 70s which will only get that price if graded as such.

You can look here

http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/price...esfull.shtml

for ballpark prices, unfortunately they have all types including gold and platinum listed so its a little harder to sort through. Completed ebay listings are good to but as an idea the uncir sell from the mint right now for 50 dollars and the proofs sold for 60. Before the silver spike not to long ago the proofs were 55 and the uncirc were 45

Theyre real popular here, I imagine that mainly just the bullion ones make it across the boarder though

that's exactly what it is, I haven't seen high premium ASE's other than the 1996 or 2006 I believe :) (can't remember which one)

I will mention that is a great price on the roll of dimes. I would love to get that. They are not $112 where I go. I have never paid under melt.
