Not sure where this belongs, but i'll post in this thread. So I saw a coin I wanted at http://www.libertycoin.com/ and I worked out a deal with a lady named Lauren. They said they would accept check, cash, or money order. She sent me an invoice and I sent out a money order. She said she would let me know when she got the money order and then they would ship the coin. Well she hasn't received the money order apparently so I called in to wells fargo to see if it was cashed. They said it was cashed on christmas eve. I tried to figure out where it was cashed but they couldn't tell. I made the money order out to "Liberty Coin LLC" which is what she told me to. If a random person on the street stole it, could they cash it? I've very worried because $280 is a lot to me, and that's how much I may be losing. I wasn't aware that sending a money order is just like sending cash if anyone can cash it. Might as well send cash, it is just as safe apparently. I was going to try to cancel the money order but it was cashed already.

Michael, that's why I sweat sending them to you, being stolen. I've heard of them being deposited into bank accts, via bank atms. If it was a western union M.O; customer service is 1-800-999-9660. I know with some companies, they can, for a fee, tell you where it ended up & who endorsed it. Generally not worth the time & effort, but with that much $$$, I'd be more than curious. Good luck.

murrellington, I thought a money order was like a check,a non personal check that can only be cashed by the person whos name it's made out to. Have you contacted Libertycoin? There is all kinds of info on their site under about us. Good luck and keep us updated. John1

I thought money orders were pretty secure and could only be cashed by who it was made out to. But not I'm not sure, I usually always use paypal. Wells fargo said I could request a copy to see who cashed it and possibly where, but it will be a $5 fee, and I don't know how hat will make me get my money back. And I called Liberty Coin today and it said they are closed december 29th and re-open on January 2nd. So now I have to wait even longer. I'm hoping someone in the company cashed it and the woman I'm dealing with didn't notice. I'm hoping it was a small discrepancy like that. Also, it may be something with my post office? I have used USPS a ton and never had one thing missing. Well in June I moved to a new place and this is the third time something has gone missing. I ordered some fish oil pills a while back and it never arrived. Currently, I have 3 silver kennedys from ebay marked as delivered but I have not received them, so I'm working stuff out with the seller. And now this money order is having problems. I'm starting to think I have a shady USPS person or something.

I always nominate all of the seller's information that is given to me on the back of the money order.
I have been using money orders both nationally and internationally for more than 40 years, for all sorts of purchases, and I have never had a single problem with this sort of money transfer.

Turns out liberty coin did cash the money order and the coin was already shipped and received by my sister in florida. I'll post more details when I get off work, but like I suspected, liberty coin was real busy and details got confused. Everything is safe though :)

glad it worked out for you last year when I sent a very large cashier's check, I sent it registered mail. When I called the company later and they said they had not received it, I told them the date, time, and who signed for it, and wouldn't you know, it happened to turn up.

Yeah so even though it was their fault that the information got lost, I'm not mad. At least I got my coin. I saw the coin on ebay and asked if I could buy from their site. They took it off ebay and I bought from liberty coin and saved $20. Great customer service. When I told them that the money order was cashed and they said they never received it, the woman was very understanding. This is what she wrote: Quote: Hello Michael,
Thank you very much for your message. Our retail store and unfortunately our accounting department will be closed until January 2nd. But we are here on the online side. Because our accounting department will be gone for a while, we will ship the coin to you on good faith today, 12/29.
In the future we will not be able to do this but we honestly feel bad as we will probably find out on Tuesday there was an error in our Accounting Department -- we were swamped during the holidays. Once your item ships, we will send you the tracking information for your package. Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns and we will be happy to help. Thank you very much for your patience during this process -- it is greatly appreciated! I understand it was probably a busy time for them. And mistakes can happen so I'm not upset. But I was thrilled with the customer service. Even though it was a nerve-racking week thinking that I lost $280, Liberty Coin will still be on my good sellers list.

I know about your concern. What if they simply state that they didn't receive it when they did? You can tell if it was cashed for a fee. I bought a coin with money order at one of the free auction sites and received the coin no problem but if there was one, it would certainly affect their ability to sell again since people are leery of sending money orders already and as you said it can be proved that the seller cashed the money order.

Illegally cashing a mailed money order is a crime on so many levels - giving the Feds a shot at you for Mail Fraud, and they....dislike that sort of stuff - that no self-respecting business would attempt it, not even a check-cashing kiosk in the inner city somewhere.

I send money orders and sometimes personal checks but most of the time, it's Paypal. Never had a problem with any of them. Glad it worked out for you!

When dealing with companies what happened to you is usually how it turns out. Some dealers are quick to deposit payments then forget that and invoice you again. I like using US Postal Money Orders because once they are cashed, you can always get a copy of the cashed MO (for a fee).
