The Friday before Christmas my house was broken into and the thief or thieves made off with a significant haul including my 55" TV, PS3 & games, BluRays, 3 guitars, and two 2011 ASE sets, among other things. The TV, PS3, games and BluRays are easily replaceable, of course. The guitars have a lot of meaning to me, so they'll be difficult to replace. The 2011 ASE sets are really aggravating to have lost just because I will definitely replace them butI know it'll take 2x or so the price I paid originally to get another set. Yes, I have insurance but it still sucks and it remains to be seen what they're going to cover. I also have a safe being delivered tomorrow. I had most of my coins locked up in a locking file cabinet but nowhere near adequate protection considering value. This safe will do the trick. No real reason to post this other than as a word of warning from personal experience and an opportunity to vent. Lock up your valuables!

I'm really sorry to hear about your loss! That's really too bad, I know how hard it is to take a loss like that and replace the lost items.. Even though some CAN be replaced it doesn't make up for the fact that they shouldn't have to be replaced... Not to mention sentimental value... When I was much younger & lived with my parents someone broke in and robbed us... All that was taken from me was my Kennedy collection... I was only about 10, but my mom got me halfs every trip to the bank that I put into a box, some silver, but I didn't really know much about coins at that point... Needless to say even though the guy was caught I never got anything back or compensation.. (My parents did for their things though) still, at that age I was heartbroken... Anyways.. The safe is a great idea.. My parents, as well as myself have had safes ever since (not the kind you can throw off a roof to open, lol) but here's a pic of something I have (that you might want to consider getting too) that I love more than my safe.. It will deter perps before they even know I have a safe... And if there still dumb enough to try to come in then they deserve the chunk of flesh there going to be missing when they try... Lol, & if I'm home when they try to enter, my dog (Tala) is the least of their worries... I've got 11 reasons why there gonna be begging for a dog bite... . "kicking a dead robber".... Lol, J/K... But in all seriousness, I'm really sorry to hear about your loss and I hope the $€£¥%#& gets caught!

Thanks, Nathan. I appreciate the wishes. And your pooch (pit bull?) is quite the looker. That's pretty much what the cop told me that took my report. "you need a dog". :)

I'm so sorry for you.I bought a safe last year and it is drilled into the concrete slab. There are some bad people about but thankfully more good people. We also put a table cloth over it...and I've sharpened my dogs teeth.

I'm really sorry for your loss CelticKnot. In this day and age there is no such thing as too much protection. I share the same tactics as NathanASE. My house is surrounded by my pitbull, boxer and catahoula. They really hate visitors when I'm not home....

I have one of those small, stupid safes that you can open by dropping on the ground. BUT, I live in an apartment, so I was more interested in fire protection when I got it. We've had several 911 calls here, no real fires though.

I'm sorry to hear this. I hope they catch them. It really hits home when something bad happens to one of our own.

Also, one thing I found interesting is that before robbing a place thieves will look in the backyard to see if there is any dog poo or patches of dead grass, as dogs make it hard to rob a house without being caught.

Celticknot, thank you, ya her colors are unique, we actually rescued her from a kill shelter when she was about a year old and she's like our baby now.. Actually she's like our actual babies nanny now...lol. She's a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, so ya, I guess basically a "Pittbull" although Pittbull is a generic name produced by the media for many "bully" breeds... Technically any dog whether bully or chihuahua put in a "bull ring" (thankfully not anymore) is a "Pittbull"... The media generalizes American Staffordshire terriers (am staffs), Staffordshire bull terriers, American pitbull terriers (APBT's) and bull terriers all into one breed but their are differences and the only one with Pittbull in the name is the APBT. Anyone who says they have a "red nose or blue" pitbull doesn't know what they have, those are not breeds, but.. nevermind I won't even get into that subject.. They get a bad name from the media but more people are bitten by golden retrievers each year, and many more than that even by small dogs, (chihuahua's etc, but they obviously don't do much damage) and from a media standpoint who want's to watch the news about that right? Doesn't have the same "ring" as a bite from a bully.. The media feeds of negativity.. I can't stand the news.. All bullies are known for their devotion to there owners, and are one of the best breeds with children, better than labs even (& my family used to breed labs, in fact we had a lab when out home was broken into) actually the old nickname for Staffordshire bull terriers was the nanny dog due to their good nature with children.. The #1 DEA drug dog is "Popsicle" an APBT rescued from a fighting ring, left to die in a freezer... Hence the name.. The #1 rescue team in Hati after the earthquake was a woman and her 2 staffies.. And the list just goes on and on... If your bored some day google "pitbull saving owner" and see how many of these breeds have saved their owner than bite people... I'm sorry for the rant... I just get fired up and carried away every time I talk about these beautiful, faithful dogs because they get such a bad rap... I figured if I could let a few people know then maybe one more of these dogs will get rescued from a shelter and become a loving member of your family...and protector of your coins, lol. Edit* the reason I get fired up is there are places in the US that "pittbulls" are illegal... And even if your dog is a pure bred lab, mutt or anything they deem a pitbull, animal control (etc) can say its a pitbull & they will confiscate your dog and put it down... It's horrible.. O ya... & I'm in no way saying anyone's wrong by referring to their dog as a Pittbull, I call my dog a Pittbull, it's easier than the explanation I just wrote and completely acceptable.. I was merely giving a technical explanation..

So here's my new line of defense, courtesy of the legendary School of Hard Knocks: Curse those darn thieves! ('darn' doesn't quite express my feelings on this particular subject...however this is a family friendly forum so I'll behave.) Lock up your valuables, people! This safe was expensive, but in the long run it's only a fraction of the value of my collection. If you're hemming and hawing about buying a safe, just suck it up and DO IT!

By the way, love the safe. I thought it might be a PITA to keep opening (with combo) and locking up, but it's not that bad. I can zip through the combo in about 5 seconds now and I'm trying to ingrain locking that bad boy up every time I leave the room into my thick skull like taking vitamins daily and making my bed.

A WORD OF CAUTIONThe insurance industry has a vendetta going against 'dangerous' dogs. Check with your insurer before getting a dog for protection. Yes, the name of the breed determines whether it is 'dangerous'. Some won't insure you if you have certain dogs, others will raise your rates. If you rent, please check with your landlord. CL is full of 8-9 month old bullies being given away. When it's moving or keeping the dog whatcha gonna do?

Just want to throw in a good word for Rottweilers. They're one of the sweetest dog breeds (unless you train them differently) and if I ever get another dog when I'm living on my own, it'll be either a papillion or a Rott.
CelticKnot, I'm sorry to hear about this. Keep an eye on local pawnshops and CL local for your guitars? I doubt they'll be easy to just hide, and most thieves are not of a musical bent.
