My cousin in southern Indiana has just found a large box of coins in her late father's attic.

It weighs, she thinks, 25 to 28 pounds.

I've offered to do a free valuation of the coins but to get them to Scotland (Great Britain) ?

What carrier do you suggest she uses, and as she has no idea about coins, how do we put a value on the coins for insurance ?

Whoa, before doing the deed, get a list of what's there. Have the most promising ones sent.
That's alot of weight to ship for common change.

That doesn't help.

My cousin knows nothing about coins, her only interest is spending them at the mall.

She doesn't understand grading, wouldn't know where to find dates or mintmarks and doesn't have the interest (strange as that may seem) to find out or the time - she has a house, a garden, a job to do and look after her husband and a lot of pets. She can probably distinguish brown from white.

At this point I don't know whether the brown are 1909 VDB, 1931S, or 1964 cents.

25 pounds of coins could be 25 pounds of metal worth melt or it could be a major fortune. Setting a value on the coins for insurance purposes will require a detailed written
inventory (including indication of individual item condition) of all items in the batch. If your cousin can't/won't help, I think you're going to need for somebody else to do so...

You should get detailed requirements about insurance documentation from whoever (shipper or whoever else) ends up providing the insurance. I'm sure they'll want a fully
detailed written inventory, photographs, etc if there's ever a claim (and very possibly just to provide the coverage in the first place).

Good luck with your problem.

You also may have problems with customs duties and VAT taxes bringing them into the country.

I honestly dont see any option where this wont cost a ton to pull off. Like mentioned theres no way to know how much to insure and thats a good amount of weight to be shipping back and forth like that. Some global flat rate boxes would probably be the best bet, but over all I'm guessing youll be looking at a couple hundred dollars of shipping fees for the round trip

The problem with put a value on them for insurance would be customs duty and VAT.

So it might work out cheaper for you to travel to the US to look at them.

If you do decide to send them over, then I would suggest small batches, since a large batch will get inspected by customs.

As others have indicated, your cousin can't insure them without getting them appraised and if she gets them appraised there's no point in your doing it again.

Does anyone know how much an appraiser would charge for a lot this size in Indiana ?

How would they calculate the appraisal fee ?

Alternatively, perhaps you could go and visit your cousin and do the valuation while you're there. Is there a reason for not visiting the USA ?

Get her to take a few pictures on her phone and txt those to you - then you'd get a basic idea of what is there.

exactly what I was going to say. It would at least give you a basic idea of what might be there. Tell her to start by photographing anything that doesn't look like current money she would spend.

In the end, with all the customs fees, paperwork, and shipping costs, it would be almost as cheap and time saving to buy a plane ticket and come over and look at them. At least you would get to visit your cousin.

Isn't it against federal law to ship or transport more than $1 (or maybe $5) in cents outside of the country?
