I know it is a little crazy asking others what I should buy, but for some reason I can't get into my head what would be the best coins to buy for value. Tomorrow I may have a chance to cherry pick some coins from a medium size collection. There is a Morgan collection with about 70 different dates. I think I could get a lot of the common dates for around $26 or $27 each, in XF/AU or better. Or go for some of the better date coins, like 1902 S and 1903 S, several CC coins but they are lower grades I am not crazy about. Of course the better date coins would be priced individually. The other choice I am thinking about is there are several different modern commemorative dollars, both proof and UNC's. From what I remember there are First flights .. West points .. Ben Franklin Lewis and Clark .. and others. I do have a complete set of UNC Comm dollars .. but I think I could pick some of these up for around $24 .. If there are enough coins I like the looks of, I would like to pick up 20 or 30 dollars. If the deal goes through I also plan on getting some fractional notes and some upgrades to my Washington quarters. I am curious what others members think would be the best deal .... Morgans at $26/$27 or Comm dollars at $24.

I agree that it is crazy asking others what you should buy, because we all have different taste.
For me, i'd buy the morgans. Easy choice as I am not interested in modern commems at all. Good luck making a choice!

They all nice but if Morgan dollars are in nice condition MS 60 or Better go for them, if the price is good.

So circulated common Morgans for $26 or Unc, proof common modern dollars for $24. They are equal in the silver content so if it were me I would go for the moderns at the lower price with no wear and no lost silver. Common Morgans were made in the millions but the commemoratives have mintage's in the hundred thousands.
Modern dollars= more silver, lesser mintage, and lower investment cost. Stack them up.

I guess I am asking more .. what others opinions are .. as to .. what might be the best deal. I am leaning toward the Morgans, but .. I always wonder why low mintage modern commemorative trade at melt.

Muddler has a point too. I'm not a commem collector so I don't know much. I've seen him around the commem forum sections so maybe his inputs are valid. I guess it really depends on what commems/morgans you can get and what their price is. Kinda hard to say without seeing anything.

If you think you may part with them someday the Morgans will be easier to find a home for--more than likely. Just a thought. Also I'd have to say the value on the Morgans is probably better than the commems--soley based on much higher deisrability and mass appeal.

The way I'd look at it is which is the easiest, fastest to get rid of if you wanted to. Not easy to sell commemoratives.

If you can buy Morgans in AU or better condition for $26 go with that. You can turn around and sell them for $35-40 with little effort. If it was me I would buy everything because those are better prices then I have seen in a year.

It was a crazy day .. glad it is now slowing down. I ended buying 25 Morgans and more, they are in a littleton two album set. I also picked up a 1908 S Indian Head cent and two fractional notes (10 cent and a 5 cent) Plus a 2013 proof eagle (can't believe someone sold a complete collection with this coin in it, it has only been out a couple weeks) oh and a 2007, 2009 and 2010 proof set and 2000, 2001 mint set. ( I need these so I can pull the Kennedy halves for my Dansco) After all that I still had $24.00 left in my pocket, they sold me a 1893 Ladies Waltham pocket watch .. and it seems to be running good.

Sounds like a good day to add to your collection. The 2013 proof eagle, was it in the OGP? Why would someone sell a coin just purchased from the mint (at surly a loss)?

Looks like it worked out for you. I also think it is odd that a proof coin that has only been out a few weeks shows up in this.
I wish I could get the 50 Morgans you left behind. I have not seen $26 AU+ Morgans in my area for a long, long time. I would buy them all.

Muddler .. yes the 2013 ASE is in the box with COA .. I paid $50 for it .. There was also 3 for each year from 2000 through 2011 and a 2012. Plus there was the 2012 two coin proof set, I would have bought that also .. but I have mine. Quote: I wish I could get the 50 Morgans you left behind. I have not seen $26 AU+ Morgans in my area for a long, long time. I would buy them all. I picked out the first 20 .. then 5 more at a little better price. There ended up being another 110 they were going to ship off to a large bullion dealer. For me being in the right place and willing to purchase a good amount helps get good prices. I am sure buying three 1oz gold coins last week helped with this sale. It really was hard seeing all those commemorative dollars and not buying some ... was hard .. but I do like the Morgans I picked up .. I will try to get some pictures and start a thread of them
