I went to the RAM recently to have a over the display coins. On display they have (amongst other things)

- 1930 penny
- holey dollars
- adelaide pounds
- 1937 shilling
- 1937 Penny

and not a security guard in sight.

Are all these coins genuine?

I also went to the reserve bank museum of bank notes and they did have a security guard there.

... so when the news flash goes out about police seeking a frenzied coin collector, last seen running from the mint with a handful of coins and laughing maniacally - we say, what?

PS How much to keep us quiet?

I have visited the Mint in Canberra on a few occasions, and they usually have a few excessively rare patterns and issued coins on display from the Mint collection. The display changes from time to time.

The Perth Mint actually has a 400 ounce gold bar that you can actually lift with your hand if you are strong enough.

When I was at the Mint about a year ago, I saw something about a "National Numismatic Collection" having been established in Australia, a few years earlier. Presumably it is modeled on the American National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC.

I've done a little research, and stumbled over this newspaper article -

The Register (Adelaide, SA) Friday 15 May 1914, page 8 -
NATIONAL NUMISMATIC COLLECTION.
The Numismatist of the Public Library, Museum, and Art Gallery of South Australia (Mr. A. Chitty) reports that during March and April he received the following donations, to the national collection of coins, medals, and other articles: â€" [list follows ...]

And in 1916, Mr. A. Chitty published a "descriptive catalogue" of the collection.

I can't find anything about a National Numismatic Collection on the RAM website.

They're all real, except the ones which aren't, and those are real copies (e.g. The Adelaide assay office pieces).

They would have 1001 security cameras and a swat team in the lunchroom playing cards, just waiting to pounce.

I am 100% sure that if the Tower of London can display the Crown Jewels, then the RAM can display a few less important items.
On a visit to the RAM some years ago, I saw the pattern Map of Australia florin on display

I have been in the British Museum after a letter of application to visit, and have had The BM example of the
Port Philip gold pattern 2 Ounce sitting in the palm of my hand. That is THE coin illustrated in Rennicks.

Its good to hear that they are genuine. Lucky I didn't slip any into my pocket before I walked out.

kg5, predecimal days?

I thought the Canberra Mint was opened in 1965 specifically to mint the decimal coins.

Interesting as I thought I was in Canberra early 60's

Maybe I was older than I thought. Latest would of been 1965 as we went to Canberra before we moved to the coast but I always thought it was in 1963.

Easy to be wrong after so many years! But I definitely saw coins and notes being made.

I think they refer to it as the National Coin Collection: http://www.ramint.gov.au/about/poli...nal_coin.cfm
