Well, I usually don't pick up borderline coins in low grade like this but...... It was staring at me and I didn't have one ......so, it's mine. I don't have the warm fuzzy feeling I like to have after a coin purchase. Oh well.

The question, would it make a G-4?

The obverse...YES

The reverse...may be holding it back...lack of full rims.

JP, anytime you save a piece of American Numismatic History, in any grade, you should feel warm and fuzzy. Not too long ago I read a post that someone made on this forum and its sticking with me and helping me define what Numismatics and this "hobby" of ours means.

The post stated we are all acting as keepers of American History.

Think about the tens of millions of Americans who have no sense of their history and where we come from. Our coinage tells and teaches this history to us:

1904
Henry Ford sets a new automobile land speed record of 91.37 mph - maybe his neighbor bet him a dime that he wouldn't get it past 85MPH and this was the coin that paid the bet

Pitching against the Philadelphia Athletics, Cy Young of the Boston Americans throws the first perfect game in the modern era of baseball - maybe one fan bet another he would blow it in the 5th and this was the coin that paid the bet

The third Modern Olympic Games opens in St. Louis, Missouri, United States as part of the World's Fair - maybe this was the dime that paid for a family to have some hot dogs and popcorn at the fair.

I say you have something in your possession to feel very warm and fuzzy over. Keep it safe

Lack of a full rim (and I think that it IS full,) is less important
than whether or not any part of the design is obliterated by the wear.
Touching doesn't count - only effacement.
I say G-4.
If anything, the 4 o'clock location [reverse] is the weakest area.
Focus on it by comparing to other examples OFFERED as G-4.

That will make you feel better.

Its color is natural and honest.

You need some hugs?

I would give it a G-4. It's a nice low mintage date also.

Thanks for your input guys! I needed a little counseling to help me sign the adoption papers on this little fella. I shall now let him play with the other children. I will hug him..... and squeeze him...... and call him George - 4. And we all lived happily ever after.

I'm with the crowd: this coin should grade G-4.

jpbone,
I do not read the riot act unless I that I think it is warranted.
It is warranted here:

When you decided to buy this dime you relied upon your internal mechanism for evaluating coins.
Too many new people doubt their internal instinct. You did not.

Therefore, you have a G-4 1904-S dime. OK, not outstanding, but honest.
It makes the grade.

And may George and his brothers and sisters play together harmoniously.

JP, maybe now you go find a G4 nickel, quarter, cents, half for that year...no cleaned junk, all original eye appeal like this, slap it all in a capital plastics holder and boom, you have a heck of nice year set and a great story to go with it...

tx for the link matt
