I have this 'scarce' single 1954 PL cent? Would it have been removed from a PL set of that year ...? ...or was it was somehow included with MS cents of that year when sent from the mint? I bought it at auction as a single NSF..red ..cameo PL cent. Any info on how this happens would be interesting to me? Thanks...

Hi DEVLEC...The 1954 NSF was only found in PL sets. My quess is this coin came from a 1954 NSF PL Set that was broken up. I don't think there was ever any business strikes. A rare coin indeed and looks to be a beauty. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks wireman..!!
This coin has a few fine contact marks on it sadly. That's why I thought that maybe it was in a mint bag from 54.
Yes,... I realize that a complete 54 set would be a nice find today. Charlton shows the 54 NSF to be a tougher set to find.

Basically, this coin is a 'mule' the older 1953 obverse die was paired with the 1954 reverse for some of the PL sets. Not that scarce - this is what I call a 'money coin' - because if you want one, it only takes money to get one...

Correct me If I am wrong but I read that there are only 145, 1954 NSFs certified by PCGS and ICCS!

SPP quote...."This is what I call a 'money coin'- because if you want one, it only takes money to get one..." But basically doesn't that apply to almost all of the coins that we see here... You dig deeper for the rarer and higher graded ones,.. but 99%+ are available if you want to pay the extra premium for them...

You can find this coin at any coin show and auction. The reason for that is because it iis not a business strike, so only collectors of proof-like strikes collect this coin.

When I bought it in the 80's, I just thought that it looked very nice in it's cameo,... and at that time I had not seen another one, ..but I also haven't been active since then.
I really like the different and rarer cameos that we sometimes see here.

If you like cameo proof like and specimen strikes, try some searches on this site. Over the past few years, members have posted beautiful examples... https://goccf.com/t/144628

Certified with good colour, if you really want to sell it (as opposed to having it sit on offer for sale unsold), I would say C$1000 for PL64, C$1500 for PL65, C$2000 for PL66. Photos?
