Hi All,
Ive just received a Macquarie Mint letter box leaflet with a silver $10coin + a $2 commemorative coin included free for just $10+p&h.. Never hearing of this before and usually disregarding letter box junk mail, can anyone shed some light on this and is it an offer worth looking into?
The deal can be viewed at the macquarie mint website under a $10for $10 offer.
Figured id mention it incase its worth looking into and others are interested.

I believe this (or at least similar deals) has been brought up here before. I think their ploy might be to get your credit card details and then send you coins which you need to pay for or send back. I think the coin is only redeemable for $10 if you send it back to Macquarie Mint before some deadline they have set too.
edit: the $2 coin is perfectly fine though.

Geez Mr T, that "on approval" type process brings back memories. When I was a young fella in the 60's Seven Seas Stamps used to do that.

Yes, the "Macquarie Mint" - not actually a mint but the direct marketing arm of Downies - has had numerous mentions here before. This thread is the most recent, with back-links to earlier discussions. In short, unless you enjoy buying overpriced coins you never ordered and did not particularly want, do not give Macquarie Mint your name, address and credit card details. And again, I hope that this time, they actually did organize the government of Kiribati to grant legal tender status to their "coins". They stuffed it up with the Nauru issue.

Quote: It's great for business! I can imagine! Especially with the credit card number. It was all done by postal order back then. I can still see in my head the multitude of releases they sent from Spain, Bulgaria in particual, Poland and Hungary. Can anyone remember if they ran the coin/note one as well? It used to be advertised on the back of Donald Duck comics and the like. I remember getting a small banknote from Hong Kong and various crappy coins before we stopped it.

It might not be as blatant as to set up an "approval" contract. It's more likely that they are compiling a mailing list of likely suckers .. I mean buyers ... that they can endlessly bombard with mail shots and promotional material.

I think in the previous thread Sap mentions that they do take your money for coins they keep sending you. Not sure about the mailing list scenario (I wouldn't put it past them) but I've got their flyers in the mail a few times and I know I've never had any dealings with them.

You'll notice the flyers everyone gets in their mailbox are "to selected households". Those are random drops which Australia Post delivers to every household in whichever streets or postcodes Macquarie Mint pays for. Because Australia Post delivers them, a "No Junk Mail" sign will not protect you from them. Anyone who responds is then added to the mailing list. And yes, you do go on the Downies mailing list as well as the Macquarie list, even if you either cancel or manage to avoid the Macquarie Mint coin-of-the-month programme.
I still get Downies flyers in the mail addressed to my Dad, four years after he cancelled with Macquarie Mint. My Dad never ordered anything directly from Downies.
