Picked this up today, a SAMPLE PCGS slab with an MS-64 1964-D dime encapsulated in it. These are not too common and are quite sought after.

This is a PCGS 2 sample slab used from 1986 - 89. Here is a link to a web site identifying the various grading services' sample slabs http://www.sampleslabs.com/pcgs.html

Neat! What is the purpose of producing a sample slab?

I think it was just to promote the company at coin shows. They are on ebay off and on and I saw them selling for 20-25 dollars. I always wanted to buy at least one myself.

PCGS was the first grading service and they produced sample slabs to show dealers and collectors how their coins would look encapsulated. The web site I posted a link to above explains it better than I can. They were given out free to encourage dealers and collectors to utilize their grading service. All of the grading services have sample slabs.

This one I have is one of the more "common" ones and I am going to keep it for a short while and will eventually sell it. For me it's just a novelty to have. I just recently acquired two AU Liberty Seated dimes, 1850 & 1858, and am in the process of working out a trade/cash deal for another, an AU 1838 No Drapery, for my Liberty Seated coinage type set.

So in this case you should ignore the "Buy the coin not the slab" mantra.

Not me. I did sell on ebay since October 1998 but no more. I haven't sold anything on ebay since who knows when last year. My userid was ssgtedusmc and I am no longer a registered user on ebay.

They probably bought at least a roll of 1964-D dimes and slabbed them. 1963 dimes and proof Roosevelt dimes were also used. Kennedy halves and 1921 P, D & S mint Morgan dollars were also slabbed this way. They had to have quite a few to give out to dealers and collectors to promote their new grading service so multiples of each exist how many of each I don't think anyone knows for sure now.

I like these, relatively cheap way of collecting slabbed coins. I have an NGC type 7, I believe.
