really? it looks really pale too me also the rim looks too thick and wouldn't replacing the core leave some sort of mark(s) on the coin?

Montreal mint, 2004 counterfeit. The surfaces and rim are dead giveaways. Note that this is Illegal to own and possess. I am collecting these for analysis by XRF (rings and cores), and I'll gladly replace yours with a mint state real one... after analysis, I send them to the RCMP lab here in Ottawa for destruction.
Send me a PM.

Why would someone fake this? It must cost over $2 to forge right?

Which is completely ridiculous. If you knowingly spend it, it would be illegal, but possession? How many crooks is Tim's making in a week?

That's the first fake 2004 I've seen. I have a 2005 and a 2006. They would have been much easier to produce than fake bills, meaning the crooks were less likely to get caught. That's why they only did coins. :)

Nathancrh1 Here is a small article on it. I believe they were a company that produced medals, tokens etc... The RCMP went there on a revenue Canada related issue and found the counterfeiting while there. I believe thats why twoonies were produced, they basically had the means to do it. People started dubbing it the "Montreal Mint" for fun. http://www.canada.com/story.html?id...0a0ee5f25082

I always assumed there was fake coins out there but this is the first time I ever heard of the Montreal mint, and the first time (that I know of) that I seen one. I want to learn what to look for in fakes but Iam still trying to learn what to look for in real ones...great info again, smart post. We should all be aware of this stuff.

Thanks for the links , this is an interesting story. What happened after the initial arrests? how many people were convicted ? Did the authorities ever find out how long they had been making fake coins for?
