Since I can't take the big monster Zeiss microscope I have in my lab, home - I decided to buy a decent USB mini-microscope...

I am actually impressed with it, even when imaging details through an ICCS flip. Because of the flip, I had to do the images upside down, and I gave up trying to flip it over using the image optimizer (which turned them back upside down!). I could do it Adobe Photoshop... but the point is that I am impressed with the little USB microscope!!

Go on my ebay store, if you want to see the photos right-side-up...

Fun stuff! Although it is no where near as good as my machine at work. Here is one of three good microscopes in my lab at work, with a mounted Nikon digital camera. Mostly for photographing sand-sized indicator minerals.

Heh - on my home computer, the images are upside-down. On my iPhone, they are upright....

So which one did you buy? I have been looking for a decent magnifier for ages, but am concerned about which one is good enough for coins pics. Can you photograph a full coin, or just under high magnification?

Thanks for posting this!

I'm using Picasa and with my PC..... all upside down or straightening or perfect cropping is corrected with a click of the mouse.

I should have a USB Microscope very soon also... and then will be able to post "proper" coin pics soon.

Congratulations. Are you able to share which USB microscope you bought and how much damage it did to your pocketbook.

Thx

You can actually use it like a telescope too, I can point mine across the street and zoom in on the action or use it as a camera for Skype. Pretty cool...

This is the model I bought.

http://www.celestron.com/science_ed...roscope.html

So software required (for a Mac).

I use it with my iMac, so the orange photo button does not work with it. But, with a Mac, just plug it in, and open up the Photo Booth app (comes with the Mac OS software) and away you go. In real time you see a mirror image on the computer screen, so just set the options in Photo Booth to reverse the image when you take the photo. Then, drag it to the desktop and play with it in the Preview app....

For coins in ICCS flips, a flatbed scanner is pretty hard to beat. I use a decent digital camera (Panasonic Luminex) for photos of an entire coin. I bought this strictly for higher powered zoom photos...

Definitely a great picture.

But if I go with my novice understanding of doubling this does not seem to have the classic signs of die doubling. In fact it has more signs of Strike Doubling.

I am a believer in the Wexler site and here is where I am wondering if this is Strike Doubling v/s die doubling

- No split serifs on 5 or 1 (maybe 1 it could be argued on top)
- Flatness along the stem of 5 and 1
- doubling on both sides - apparently a sign of Die Deterioration.

Then again I probably do not have as much experience as some of the others on this topic.

This is the result of the numbers being repunched on the die during the time the die was hubbed. We have found coins which show the hubbing process likely was the result of 3 impressions of the punch on the die with annealing between and the numbers may have been separately punched at any time in the creation of the die.
