I dont believe this is an error, I just figured this was the best place to put it to get the right answer. I have seen similar before, but curious what causes this? Obverse feels smooth, almost glass like quality. Oh, I believe it is (was) a 1980.

Looks like a 1980-D to me.What makes you think it is not a capped die error?

It very well could be an error, just one I wasnt familiar with. I will dig up info on Capped Die. Thank you as always John1! A small part of me thought it might be a possible error due to the feel of the "finish" and also the fact that the rim on the obverse seems normal and relatively undamaged. The normal reverse to boot.

To think I almost put this in the bag for the Coinstar... phew!

EDIT: Since I am new to this error and was just doing a little reading, from my understanding this would probably be classified as an Early Stage Capped Die Strike, correct? And if I am understanding it correctly, not a Brockage as it doesn't appear there is a mirror image anywhere, correct?

I would say this is a late stage capped die strike. The design from the capped die is starting to bleed through the cap.

Yep. Was cool to find, but not something I really collect so figured the proceeds (even minor) can go towards the things that I do. Coins go out so more can come in... Translates to happy wife, happy life for those who are married ;)

Nice find. Checked it out on the bay. I find the starting price interesting, how did you come up with that.

Is there any chance that this is just a really nice Struck Through Grease? Doesn't look like most Capped Dies I have seen....admittedly I haven't seen many.

You already have the answer ... struck through an obverse capped die.

Nice find ... hopeful it can bring you a few $ on the Bay.
