1811 is one of two key dates for the classic head Half Cent series. It's generally found in low, circulated grades; PCGS and NGC have only certified 4 mint state 1811's between them. They also were made using low-quality planchets, so planchet flaws, granular surfaces, and corrosion are common. This 1811 is my current representative, and I like its smooth, sound surfaces a lot. It has a couple little planchet flaws and plenty of honest wear. I happen to disagree with the NGC grade. To me, this coin has areas of different grades, and NGC's net grade is not my net grade. I would truly love your opinions about this rare survivor. I'll post NGC's grade once folks have had a chance to chime in. Thanks!

I'd bet NGC called it VG8 details, I think it's a VG10/F15. Grading from EAC I'm trying to learn, it is not so easy. Robinson Copper Quotes books has helped me to come to terms with some of what the EAC standards are, this coin is not scudzzy at all, just honest old wear. It does appear to have been cleaned and possibly recolored but I can't tell for sure, I don't think that would detract or take away from EAC grade. The reverse is sure hard to tell maybe it was an uneven planchet that makes the strike weaker on one side, as it grades from VG to VF across it.

VG-8/F-12 Definitely not a details grade. Nice coin!

I'm going with VG8. Really nice example of a tough coin to find in this condition

I think I would say F-12 to 15 on this lovely coin.

I see no reason why this one won't make F12. In any case, it looks problem free to me and I'll be surprised if it grades below VG as suggested here.

It's corrosion free. I'm also thinking cleaned/recolored..has that appearance. You have to see enough old copper to start noticing the subtleties. It's a good looking coin regardless. I'm thinking NGC called it VG8 details. In EAC terms, I'm calling it 12/15.

Thanks for all your input. It appears that CCF members can see different grades for this coin (ranging from G6 to F15), just like I do. Here's what NGC says: D0ubl3Eagle got the grade; everyone else graded higher. I personally think the level of obverse detail takes it easily into the VG range, if not F. My theory is that the reverse rim weakness was interpreted as wear (AG), thus giving a net grade of G; however, I believe the rim weakness is strike, not wear. With respect to the question of cleaning, I don't see it in hand, but am willing to entertain the notion from the experts here. In the meantime, I have replaced this coin in my Half Cent set, and I have a tiny inclination to send it in to try for an upgrade. I'd probably either regrade at NGC or crossover at PCGS. I'm not brave enough to crack this one out and submit it raw, since I'm worried about a details grade. (I've found the TPGs can be hard on worn coins.) Any words of wisdom?
