Hi guys, Unfortunate recent family events have forced me to sell my coin collection. It is Canadian copper mostly...lots of 1859 coins through 1920. Many of the rarer cents (ie, 1925, 1949 to, 2006 mag, 1962 harp et cetera). I will have a complete list and photos soon. My question is where is the best place to sell this? ebay takes 20% off the top don't they? I have no retail coin collectors in my area (Prince George BC) so that is also not an option. Any advice is appreciated!! My $0.02 Worth

Sorry for breaking any rules, it was not my intention. To clarify I was not really trying to sell here on this forum but to ask for advice on "how" to sell a collection. ebay I believe takes 20% and I have no local stores to visit. It is not a large collection so would not warrant an auction. Just asking for advice. If this post also violates the rules please feel free to remove it. Thanks

I don't know if ebay is 20%, but it's a considerable amount. It's also probably not how you'd get top dollar. What's your time frame for selling? If it's quick, then I'd say a dealer or ebay may be your best options. You could always post it on ebay as a Buy It Now for close to trends, and accept offers. A Kijiji ad might even get some attention.

You are only 32 posts away from using CCF Buy/Sell/Trade function... start surfing, reading, and commenting...
My point is, you are better selling to collectors, than a coin dealer.

I agree with SPP. At least here you will get fair price and nobody will pay fees for services to third parties. Also, the collection will get into the hands of people who appreciate the coins. We could label the coins as part of the twocents collection!
1859 is my favorite coin! lol

2c worth, ebay will take 10%, PayPal takes their cut too, and consider the time and energy required to sell on your own... I'd recommend visiting an established dealer or two in your area, if time is on your side. Of course, they take their cut too, but they'll partner with you to max your return.

I would consider selling some of the items on ebay that will sell well there. Things like 1922 to 1925 cents in typical VG to VF grades always do well with good photos. You will also probably get a fair price on your 2006 mag. For coins that are worth only a few dollars, the fees are higher as is the work to make a buck. On the other hand, dealers will rape and pillage you on those coins too. eBay/Paypal fees do go down as prices go up so the cut is not too bad on something like a 2006 mag...much better than a dealer cut. And what is the alternative? Auctions charge as much or more if you count the buyer's premium. The dealers cut will be more too. The only good alternative is a sale on CCF, but that may not work as quickly or effectively as ebay or as you would like. It really comes down to how much time you are willing to put into it

We should have a coin club 4 members within a 5 hour drive It would be easy for me, with my job I travel all over Northern BC I'm not sure my wife would approve, I don't think she would want me meeting anyone who would encourage me. Lol By the way, I'm sorry to hear about your family problems....hopefully its not to serious.

My last months sales on ebay using Paypal took 10.86% off my gross sales. But I am in the US and do not have a store front on ebay just individual sales.

ebay collects 10% as a "Final Value Fee" when your listing closes. They also collect 10% of your Shipping Fee. Pay Pal takes aprox 3.35% of the money you receive from the sale. Important thing to remember is that ebay does not take its fees directly from your sale but will invoice you on a monthly basis. This actually works out better for them since they own Pay Pal as well and collect a higher fee with Pay Pal from a single sale by not taking their cut instantly and billing you for it. A few cents here and there really add up over millions of sales.. :) Sorry to hear that you need to sell your collection. I hope you get what you think it is worth. Good Luck.

Hi TwoCentsWorth
Nice to see the moderator put your original post back where it belongs. I don't think I've seen them do that before. Its a shame you are forced to put your collection up for sale. I hope everything works out for the best with you.
