Hello! I'm new here and I've just recently started collecting. I mainly just keep anything old/weird I come across.

I often pick up rolls of dollar coins from the bank to use at work (of course I check all of them before using them) and I stumbled across this one here. It appears the clad layer on the obverse is missing. I've searched for DAYS on the internet for information on this and the only thing I could find was the article on coins.about.com about Mary C.

I took it to a local coin shop and the guy looked at if for a second (literally) and said somebody did that to the coin. I didn't believe him so I emailed the NGC dealer closest to me but I haven't received a response. So now I'm here!

My camera is of low quality so the only picture worth showing is below, but I can tell you the coin is significantly thinner than the "regular" coin. I don't have a scale but since it is thinner I'm going to assume it weighs less.

From what I've read, the strike should be weaker but everything looks normal to me.

Also, what I couldn't show is the edge lettering is a little off. The top of the "2007 P" is nearly cut off by the edge of the coin.

My questions are:

1) Is it possible this is a fake?

2) Is there anything else I should be looking for in order to authenticate it?

3) Since it appears to be very rare, how do I get anybody to take me seriously and get this authenticated?

Thanks in advance!

Closer pictures would help. Not sure how good of responses you are going to get with those pictures. Also photos of obverse and reverse (maybe the edge also) would help.
Rest in Peace

You're going to have to weigh that coin to know if a layer is missing.

And, as Jayman wrote, we're going to need better photos of both sides and I'd like to see the rim as well.

It's possible that you have an error coin but far more likely that it is just environmental damage.

Anyway, keep it. Some day you might have a scale, or get be able to take a better photo.

If you feel like it, look for a coin club in your area or go to a coin show and see what some other people say about it.

Good luck.

Ok thanks guys, I really appreciate it. Once I figure out how to do it I'll get some weights and some better pictures up ASAP.

I ran over to the coin shop here downtown and the guy weighed it for me. The potential error coin weighed 6 grams and the "normal" coin weighed 8.1. He also said he was going to do some research for me and let me know what he finds. I'll keep you guys updated.

Also, after reading your guys' comments I took a closer look at the reverse and the top of the "United" appears weak, and this area directly corresponds with the cut off "2007 P" on the edge. I'll do my best to get some better pics up.

Are the devices crisp?
Or are they weak?
Is the rim weak or strong?
Reverse normal or missing plating also?

Coop,

The devices seem normal other than the weak "United" I mentioned above. The reverse is normal plated and the rim may seem a little weak but I certainly do not have a trained eye.

There's a good chance that it is missing a layer. These are found from time to time. Google "missing layer Presidential dollar". You will see many examples and will be able to compare yours to other examples. Thay have a distinct look. Otherwise better pictures are key for us to help you. Good luck.
