I have taken pics with the 1864 cent next to a normal 1862 cent. Is this 1864 cent just a penny someone altered or whatever reason? The reverse has a few striation marks on it.   |

Now that makes sense. It does look like a Dryer Coin, acid etched. Never heard of that before, thanks for the help. |

^ No a local coin dealer once showed me a 1858 Canada 20 Cent that had quite a share of dryer experience.

Is the 1864 a CuNi or bronze type?

It looks damaged. Guys use to make rings out of coins while in the service by hitting around the edge with a spoon. Looks like some one started that on this one.

Spooning wouldn't obliterate the main part of the coin though, would it? I would suspect that may have been what happened to the Canadian 20 cent piece though... a real shame.

It looks like it was a low grade pitted coin before some one started to work on it.

I suspect it's "spooned" --carefully hammered to evenly reduce the diameter. Usually, on ' Dryer Coins' that wide flange you see here is folded over the outer devices. --just one opinion.  |

Dryer Coins ... I agree that most of them have the folded over edges. One of the pics is of a Wheat penny without the folding, but it also is not as dramatically altered as this Indian. So it might be this one was spooned instead  https://goccf.com/t/143863

I watched a YouTube video of someone hammering a coin to make a ring, pretty interesting.
