One of the best contemporary examples of an altered date, that I have ever seen...

I just had to come out of lurk mode, and share this one. It was stuck in the 1921 slot of an old Whitman holder, from a collection that Universal Coins here in Ottawa purchased. Everyone in the entire coin shop loved how the old collector "filled the hole", so to speak, so much so, that a friend bought this half for his "what the heck" exonumia collection....

SPP, why do you say artdio's coin is an altered date.

My guess would be to check the known markers for the 21 half.
The 2nd 1 is of a slightly different colour and shape...though very, very close but a touch thicker in spots. Would the real ones be like that..?
I'd like to see a dial-indicator placed on that 21 and get very accurate reading of the changes in height and placement of the 1's..
Still makes the heart beat fast when you see one...
artdio...thanks for that great one...

@ Devlec, your welcome.. To me with all the cleanings and such + wear maybe thats why the slight change in color or width .. I have compared it with 3 certified examples and beleive it or not all 3 have different second 1's ... Thinner, angles, and shape? so what is right ? Here are some certified ones with mine

The rarity of this coin was not appreciated until at least a decade after it was minted. Exteremely unlikely that any were faked in the 20's when your grandfather received the coin.

Great coin Sid. I'm no expert in fakes, but it sure looks real to me. Thanks for sharing this rare coin and it's history.

Quote: SPP, why do you say artdio's coin is an altered date. Sid and I already have discussed this, during a period of time that I had the coin in hand and I discussed this with Sandy Campbell. This is Sid's show, and not mine - I'll leave it up to him to explain why. Eventually, this specific coin will be featured in a future article in the CN Journal (when I get around to writing it with Sid).

@ SPP. feel free Roger to add in....I have no problem with what we discussed... As I said in reply to Devlec, when you look at 2 certified examples the last 1 is different in both this is why I posted the comparision pics... Blow up the pic of the 3 1921's and look closely at the first date.. That is a certified coin. To me all 3 are different.. As SPP will attest to the coin is 100% legit but as he stated altered date... It went to both Canadian places and the first said no pedigree no grade...The second place and( this was after Rogers test ) said he thinks it is a cast ) so both places 2 different opinions, + I sent it abroad to the US and was told altered surface ( laquer ) not one of these called it altered date....... SO as I said it still looks great in my set no matter what and will remain there for anyone to see and examine up close....

Only judging from a picture is tough, but it just does NOT look right. Spidy senses go up on this one. I have seen a number of 1921 halves up close from G4 to VG 10 and a couple of AU/Uncs including the famous Winnipeg example sold by Gatewest to a prominent BC collector a few years back. All were certified. If yours was real it would be in someones holder. Mark me down with SPP as doubtful.
