So from all the 50 cent threads that have been put up lately I've really become motivated to focus on working on this aspect of my collection.

However I have a bit of a conundrum...

I can say with certainty that there will be little chance I will ever have the following dates in my possession:

1888
1890
1894?
1899
1905
1921 (ohh I laugh... )

So what's a guy going to do?

To me it's that "hole" where the coin should go that would bother the heck out of me.... so in this situation would you just get a second coin and fill the date or would you ever consider just buying a $3 knock off to fill the gap ?

For me with my nickles I put just another random date small nickel where the '21 should go... but even that bothers me some... and I know there's little chance I'll ever pick up a '21 nickel..

your thoughts...

not about Canadian coins, but about spaces that would never be filled:

I know I will never have a 1895 Morgan dollar, so at last year's F.U.N. show I purchased a piece of 1 oz copper bullion. I sanded the edge until it fit the hole. I know its not the correct coin in that hole, but I think the copper bullion makes a nice contrast.

See to me that's a fantastic idea! Made out of copper so you KNOW it's not legit.. but fills the hole... and even better if it had the date..

Some members put impaired proofs in the hole, others place the correct type coin, but have the other side of the coin showing.

I kept looking, but I could find no "fantasy" pieces for that specific date.

How about get a photo, reduce it to the right size, and then glue it to a piece of cardboard cut to fit the slot?

Fill the empty holes with varieties that fit in your budget.

That's what the counterfeiters are hoping for.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

really catches the eye and starts a conversation. No doubt better then an empty space.

Just get a coin so worn you can't see the date, or at least part of it. If all you can see is the 19 (19XX), the next two letters could be a 21.

First, I try not to start a coin series that I KNOW I can't finish.
(Of course I arrived at this philosophy AFTER I was well along on my type set. Oops!)

But if I can't afford to fill a hole, I don't.
It will sit there empty annoying me until my dying day.

One of the reasons I use 3 ring binder pages instead of these types of albums

Personally I would never fill any collection hole with a reproduction/fake/etc. I don't support anyone who makes those items, even if they have copy or replica stamped on them. If the physical hole bugs you that much, just put a generic coin in that hole, with the obverse (or non-date side for American coins) facing up. Or some varieties as another poster suggested.

I'd just leave the empty hole as a reminder of my station in life LOL. Actually I just don't like copies or replicas and I personally hate to sully my collection with fakes.

Some of the dates that the OP mentioned (aside from the 1921) are not totally impossible - one might have to save his or her money for a while but they are doable. I myself am a collector with pockets that are not very deep and some of those tough dates reside in my collection in G and VG grades.
