This is my first post. I've been lurking here for a couple of weeks. I picked up this Morgan for 6 bucks. The silver buyer I bought it from said it was silver, but a fake coin. I disagree. What I know: The weight is correct, it is silver, and I don't have much invested. What do you fine folks think? Any opinions are appreciated!

 to the community I must say, if the weight and diameter are correct, I don't see anything obvious that jumps out as fake.

If the seller is selling a known fake/replica/whatever that is not marked "COPY" he's violating the US Hobby Protection Act (see, for example http://www.usmint.gov/consumer/?act...usReplicas).As to the diagnostics - I don't know Morgans, so somebody else will have to weigh in (pun intended).

 to CCF! If the weight and diameter are right then it may be real but the obverse looks a bit crude. It'll be hard, even for experts to confirm without the coin in hand. Best take it to a local coin dealer.

The details appear exactly the same as another 1890 O I have. I can spot Chinese counterfeits right off the bat. The only thing that throws me off is the 'frosty' look of some of the surfaces.

 to CCF. I see nothing about this coin being a fake from the photos posted. If the weight and diameter are correct it's certainly not a chinese fake. They are off on all levels. If the frosty details are on the fields as well as the devises there is something going on however. It could have been dipped wrong or even etched by some method or even bead blasted. Hard to say from the photos.

at 6 bucks, being silver, I would buy them all day long. That is much less then melt.

@BStrauss3 - Point of order: Under the current Hobby Protection Act, only persons who *manufacture* or *import* copies for sale must mark them with "COPY" to certain size and depth specifications before selling them. Otherwise, the only requirement is to be honest that it's a copy or counterfeit and not a genuine coin.
@SeatedSeeker - Can we see a picture of the reeding? Is there any portion of the reeding where it overlaps?

@SeatedSeeker - Thanks. :-)
Yeah I'm not seeing any major red flags other than some nasty wear.
If it's silver, enjoy it. :-)

Not even much wear - AU50 maybe? I don't see any reason to consider it counterfeit. The ear is a bit of a red flag, but I think it's a strike artifact. This is a New Orleans coin, needing evaluation with slightly different rules than other Morgans. Perhaps the seller was unaware of that. Either way, you got it for less than half of melt.

Weight correct, diameter correct, silver, and Reeding looks right. If it's a fake, it's the best one I've ever seen. I'd buy em at $6.00 all day long. Btw and a on the photos.

"I'd buy em at $6.00 all day long." Until you go to VAM it and find out it is a fake. Every Morgan and Peace dollar has a VAM #. Find out which VAM # it is and show the markers and then I will believe it is real. If the seller is calling them fake then I would be very careful.
