Hello forum people,

This coin I have looks like it have been overstruck. I am wondering of someone knows more about this one.

I hope the pictures are clear enough. You can see the best on the date 1881.

Well, if I'm reading Snow's guide correctly you've got a good one.
It's NOT overstruck; it's an RPD.
I see it as an S4, 1881 88/88 (e).
(e) means "east".

His guide describes it as, "This is a very bold repunched date and is very rarely seen."

Hello Kanga,

Thanks alot for this information. Is there anything on the internet about it? I try to find it with your explenation but Can't find anything. Maybe there are some US sites which describe more about this one?
So if I See it correct this one is an repunched date on 1888? Not familiar with all the short notes. Whe don't have that here.
Thx,

I agree that is an S(SNOW)-4. It would probably grade G/VG. The variety probably does not carry much of a premium but it is still a nice coin to have. Rick Snow is considered 'the' expert on IHC and FE. He has a published an attribution guide that covers all the varieties for these coins. You can purchase a guide at his web site at Eagle Eye coins.

It looks like the S-4 for 1881, with the 88/88 inside the top loops. It's a "two-star" variety in the Snow guides, which means "2-3X premium". It's not one of the real high-demand varieties which include the 1869/9, 1867/67, 1873 DDO, 1887 DDO, 1888/88 (& the biggie 1888/7) 1894/1894, 1897 "1 in neck", which sell easily in any grade. Realistically, I would grade around VG8, a $5 coin, so maybe a $10 coin to a variety collector.
