Hi, This post is made mainly out of curiosity - I had a local store clerk hold back anything 'different' for me for quite some time now - Mainly Kennedy halves - The other day she realized the value of some of these coins - and now keeps them all for herself. Fair enough. How often has anyone lost their coin 'connection?'

Hi and welcome to CCF.
This is nothing new and has been going on for years.
Some folks get curious and now with the internet it is even easier for them to learn.
But maybe you have made someone a coin collector....you could tell them about CCF.

The main teller at one of my bank branches collects for her and her daughter... the next bank down gives me all the junk coins they get. Not to over generalize or stereo-type but the geeky type with the Star Trek shirt is a bad bet to have for a coin mule ... a danger junky that jumps out of planes and could care less about a coin is the type to look for edit:

Currencypro, the old saying "a little knowledge goes a long way." As Kena stated, Quote: maybe you have made someone a coin collector....you could tell them about CCF.

Thanks for the nice welcome. Looks like I lost a coin connection, but the hobby gained a new collector. I will certainly tell everyone about this site (including this clerk)!

Ok - pass on the Trekies - LOL. I picked a fine time to complain about counting drawers for a restaurant I worked at once as a kid. Just so happened that I found almost $40 face value in silver halves, quarters and dimes not to mention a few $2 notes (red) and silver certificates. My boss was watching as I sorted out the 'bullion' and paid face value out of my wallet (about all I had on me). Seemed after that I'd only get the odd drawer to count.

Hope the hobby continues for them. My brother has collected coins for a few months but I think he is getting out of it.

The other day one of my employees came in the office while I was counting the money to ask for change. I went out to the register and opened it and this was staring me in the face: He had NO clue what it was. The employees all being foreigners, they really don't know about the history of our money. But he was curious why I snagged it out of the drawer so quickly, so I explained it to him. Which then led to an explanation of star notes. By the end of the lesson, there were like 5 customers standing around listening intently. LOL I do not know if it had a lasting impression or not, but I am still getting good star notes.

Even worse story. I used to be able to buy lots of great coins for practically nothing compared to what they were worth. At a local flea market there was this guy with large buckets of coins on his table. One was all US and the other was all Foreign. His sign said $1 each. I started to look through the US ones and found lots of Mercury dimes. I asked how much if I buy lots of these. He said the more I buy, the less they would cost. I bought many from him every weekend. As an example I found lots of 26 S's, one 42/41, many other rather expensive ones. One day I gave him a copy of a Numismedia Mag with coin prices. From that day on he started to charge those prices, no longer the $1/coin. I lost a great source of coins for cheap prices. Flea market person turned coin dealer.
