What grade would you expected this coin to have received? On the plus side, the strike and luster are excellent for an 1883-O. On the minus side, there are some ugly black spots on the reverse.

Spots aren't too bad. MS-64 is about right.

MS63, with all the deep hits I can't imagine paying MS64 money for a dollar like this, the carbon spots along with the gash in the neck make it not so eye appealing even with a great strike and luster, IMO.

I'd say MS63 as well, a few contact marks on the cheek and in the fields of the obverse prevent it from going higher I think.

Well, here's what NGC thought of it. A classic case of the truth of the axiom, "buy the coin, not the slab" as I picked this up on the cheap on account of its deficient assigned grade. The additional VAM identificatiion is mine. It's certainly a candidate for being broken out and resubmitted, but I'm not going to do so for the potential gain of just a couple of points.

I'd have to see it in hand to really get a good idea on the grade, but from the photos, MS61 does appear to be a bit low.

MS-61 seems too low, I'd go MS-63.

Seems a little low. Wonder if they dinged it heavily for the spots? Looks too nice and mark free for a 61. I would have said 62/63.

I was thinking 61 or 62 max. Nice strikes are common on '83 O's, and you have some deep hits on the obverse focal area, as well as an overall "baggy" look to it, along with impaired luster... and the spots.
