I don't think so. It is probably just the lighting. Still I have seen this kind of toning before, especially with Franklin halves that have been in albums for a few years.

When I first looked at it after I cleaned the dirt off, it looked as if it was burnt

Its not a rare date or mark, so what would there be to hide?

Possibly a previous cleaning and/or hairline scratches?

people try to experiment all the time things they read online to see what effect that it has on the silver. I'm sure that is what you have here. I do not think you can mimic certain factors that create the natural effect of toning. IMO, this coin is ugly to say the least with blotchy sulfur burns from what ever failed method was attempted and is now only worth its melt value of silver.

I'd go with NT. IF it was AT, the color would be more consistant on both sides. I suspect it was just sitting in the wrong place to long. That would explain why the rear is different than the front.

Artificial toning. If you have doubt, then send it in for TPG and find out for sure. The grading fee then becomes part of the "tuition" for the degree in Numismatics you've been working on since you started collecting. I've been working on my degree for over 50 years!
