That prefers the BU finish over the Proof.

I have developed a love for the commemorative series of coins, modern and classic, but due to the associated costs have decided to work on completing the moderns first. Maybe it is because the classic series will all be circulated and will "fit in" with the modern set I will complete but the thought of adding the proofs is just no appealing to me. Anyone else?

I agree with you to the extent that proofs became ugly to me when they over did the frosted devises. It used to be a thrill to find a cameo proof coin. Now it's a thrill to find one that doesn't look like it's been bead blasted.

I'm not against proof coins and I'm not against BU either, or Satin, or specimen. My preference just depends on which coin, classic or modern? Design? Mintage? Value?

For example, I'd never pay the ridiculous premium people ask for Proof ASE's. Just my opinion though.

On the other hand, a Proof Seated dime? Or Proof Barber? I'm all over it!

Me too. Not a fan of proofs. The only proofs I have are a 1961 Franklin, a 1973 clad Ike, a Polk Presidential dollar, and a 1963 quarter, and with the exception of the '61 Franklin, all came from circulation. I like coins that are representative of circulating coins, which proofs are not.

Although I did see some GORGEOUS 1960's proof Kennedy halves at the LCS on my lunch break today.

Also agree. I get certain proofs only if they are minted only as proofs (like most modern 'S' mints coins) but would not be interested in a 1961 Proof quarter for instance. Nice Uncirculated business strikes just seem more like 'real' coins.

I am on the fence on this one. I collected all of the Bullion ASEs in NGC MS69 brown labels and purchased 1986-1988 in Proof NGC PF69 with the intention of completing the set, but I have lost focus because I think I like circulated coins more, hence my growing obsession with coin roll hunting and Dansco Albums, much to my wife's perturbation.

I guess I will be the one that says he likes proof coins. I have modern proof collections: Commemorative dollars, ASE's, and silver proof sets with a few others like Franklin cameo proofs. In turn I have many BU examples too as well as plenty of circulated but I must say I'm a sucker for a nice proof coin.

I love the older proofs. Hard to find items prettier than a 66+ proof barber, IMO. I do like BU coins too though.

No, you are not alone!

My focus for the modern US commemorative series is on the UNC versions as well. I have a few proofs for issues of particular personal interest, but I do not try to maintain a complete set of them.

My modern UNC set is complete at this point, so I only get to add new coins as they are released - but I'm always on the lookout for interesting tie-ins between releases!

Good luck with your pursuit!

You are not alone. In fact, in most cases, I prefer a lightly circulated coin.

I suppose that makes me a bit of an odd ball.

Oh, well.

davex summed up my thoughts. I am so disappointed if my hubby were not so stubborn, we would stop with the modern proof sets until they stopped blasting them to, well you know.

Agreed that I personally prefer the modern set in MS rather than proof ... admit that I only have 5 years of the modern set in my collection.

Not quite ... the vast majority of the classic set is available in MS state ... and as such a nicely matched set combining the classic and modern series is an achievable goal ... given enough financial resources.
