Hey guys I know its not always easy to tell by pics, but let me know if you think this coin is genuine or not. And explain your reasoning if you can, thanks!

I'm not a professional, but that mintmark looks way off. My gut feeling is this is a genuine 1916 Mercury dime with an added Denver mintmark.

The "D" on a genuine example ought to be quite square looking, which this one isn't. But on the other hand, how odd if for the collectibility factor the mintmark was added to a coin that's so heavily circulated, with the wear in that area matching up so well.

A real closeup shot of that "D" would be helpful in rendering a true verdict....

My vote is fake...a coin in that condition should have the mint mark partly worn and should appear connected to the worn edge, as in this example:

Need to see it in-hand or a true macro shot of the mintmark. It's positioning looks okay, but the shape looks off, and the wear pattern doesn't match what I'd expect to see in the MM area. I'm inclined to say fake from that view, simply because altered and counterfeit '16-D's are almost as common as the real deal, if not more so.

I'm not so fast to call it fake. I had a similar PCGS FR2 example and the D looked just like this one, a blob with a half crescent shape.
I'd send it to ANACS.

Mintmark looks bogus to me. I wouldn't buy a 16-d unless slabbed by PCGS or NGC.

The coin is real, but the "D" might not be. Only buy graded/slabbed unless you are 101% sure.

Might be my eyes are getting old but that D on the back looks sort of like a 0 and a D and possibly a Q.
If this one is real, sure is an odd looking mint mark. Might be from a secret US Mint in a suburb of Denver.
Even looks like a 0 over A.
On a coin with the reputation of one of the World's most counterfeited coins, I'd only look for a slabbed one.
Rest in Peace

I think it's real, but I'm looking at pictures.

If you own it send it in for TPG then you'll know for sure. If you are thinking about buying it then get an extended return period so you can return it if it is bad.

The mint mark has some funky toning to it but we can guess all day as to whether it's genuine or altered.

It was an ebay purchase. I have been debating on paying for it or canceling transaction.

He has excellent feedback and appears to take care of issues. Call the Seller and talk to him.

See if the seller is willing to ship straight to ANACS and receive payment when it is authenticated. On a coin like that, he should be willing to do that.

To me, it looks fake. I do not like that MM at all. As mentioned, the wear doesn't match. It IS in the right spot I think, but like carl said, that looks for all the world like an over date. I would not make this purchase without that arrangement I mentioned.
