I'm curious about both the grade of this coin and whether it has been cleaned. Perhaps more importantly, I'm new to collecting and am struggling to know what to look for to assess possible cleaning. I've read a number of things online, but still feel like I'm missing something. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Tough to tell from those pics, but I'd say AU details.

It's hard to assess from photos of this nature, but from the general even appearance of the surfaces, and that they look a bit on the shiny side, I'd judge it may have been lightly polished at some point. From the standpoint of wear, it's probably in the AU range.

Clearer pics would help but I agree that it looks polished to some degree. Maybe AU53 details

Very cleaned. XF/AU details. My best advice to you is visit a local coin shop or coin show and buy a few PCGS slabbed common S-mint Morgan dollars. Buy an MS-60, MS-63 and an MS-65. You should be able to get all three for less than 400$. Learn the shuttle differences between the grades. Compare the luster differences. Compare the contact marks. Learn what makes them different. Compare your graded coins to the coins you have in your collection. Eventually it will "click" and you will know that is original and what is cleaned. The investment in the three graded coins will pay you back many times over by keeping you from making mistakes. (I call it "tuition") Good luck!

Based on these images, IMO, grade and/or details opinions are conjecture.

AU details, cleaned. That kind of shine is not what we want.

A good way to check polishing is to check the "cartwheel" luster. That is, hold the coin and tilt while spinning it and see if there are a few lines of light that go around the coin like a cartwheel. If there is, then it is most likely NOT cleaned.
